Dapper Dog

It’s finally cool enough for waistcoats! I managed to wear some more lightweight ones in the spring, but the thicker ones had to wait until the fall/winter, and here’s the first. It’s actually reversible – gray on one side and plaid on the other – and for this outfit, I paired it simply with gray pants and navy shirt for the plaid to really shine. And finally, to compliment the Dark Academia/vintage/menswear vibe of the waistcoat, I added my “dog with a bow tie” brooch (hence the title). Expect to see a lot more of these waistcoats this season – I can’t wait to wear them all! (Though, technically speaking, I did wait. For almost a year.)

Dress Renewal

I tend to not feature dresses a lot on the blog – not as much as skirts anyway – because it’s always difficult to turn them into different outfits. Even if you wear different shoes, it would still look the same. Of course, this is a “blog” problem rather than a real-life problem, but still, I would like to show off my dresses more often. But after the SIA outfit last week, when I layered a button-up with a dress, I suddenly remembered that it was an option (provided that the weather isn’t too scorching, of course). So here is another variation of the same look. I like the color combo of navy and mustard yellow, and both the dress and the shirt are very light-weight, so even though it was pretty muggy, they were still comfortable to wear. Definitely going to try more of this!

Crabby

Ever since I read the book about Madeleine Albright’s brooch collection, I became aware of how you can use the brooch to convey a certain message or mood, and I tried to apply that to my own brooches. Of course, I still choose them based on how well they go with the outfit, but occasionally, when I just want a brooch to add some touch of interest to my outfit, I would stop to think what it says about me.

Take this outfit, for example. I wore it to attend an important work meeting on Zoom, and as we all know, when it comes to the Zoom meeting look, it’s all about from the neck up, so I wanted to add a brooch. At work, I’m known for my directness and perhaps even stubbornness when defending my views (not always a good thing, I’ll admit. I’m working on it), so I chose my crab brooch because there is a saying in Vietnamese that translates to “As stubborn as a crab” (since a crab only moves sideways instead of back-and-forth, see) to show that I’m not afraid to speak my mind. In the end, it wasn’t necessary because everybody was in agreement anyway, but it was nice knowing I could rely on my brooch for a bit of strength. (The shoes were an afterthought. I didn’t wear them for my meeting, naturally.)

Summer Layering

When the weather warms up, one of the things I always struggle with is how to make my outfits more interesting. During the cooler months, I can always rely on layering to play around with colors and textures, but that’s not so feasible in the summer. This year, however, with my newly purchased waistcoat, I have a summer layering item that doesn’t add too much bulk or weight. Of course, it only works with a lightweight waistcoat like this one, and only when it’s under 35 degrees Celsius (about 95F). Anything higher than that and I’m not even venturing outdoors, let alone worrying about having an interesting outfit.

Different Shoes

At first, I wore this outfit with my black wedge sandals, but then I realized I have been wearing them a lot – in all but one of my outfits this month so far – so I decided to switch to my nude sandals instead. In hindsight, I realized that the black wedges may have been a better choice because they help to balance out the dark-colored top and the light-colored bottom. Ah well, it’s too late now. And besides, I needed to break up the monotony. With a different kind of monotony.
