Hobbit Chic

Hey, remember a couple of weeks ago when I was dressing in fall colors in an attempt to bring fall weather here more quickly? It may have worked! (Just kidding, the weather is due to cool down around October anyway). It’s not cool enough for sweaters yet – heck, it’s barely even cool enough for long sleeves – but there is an almost imperceptible change in the air, a tiny hint of crispness early in the morning and when you’re in the shadow, enough for me to bring out my woolen waistcoats. The waistcoat and the earth tones of this outfit remind me of the Hobbits’ costumes, so, in lieu of a Leaf of Lorien, I accessorized it with my own leaf brooch (I actually have another brooch that looks more like the Leaf of Lorien brooch, but I like the understated feel of this one with this outfit more.)

Light Academia

Dark Academia has been my newest style discovery this past year (I hate using the word “aesthetics”, because I’m strictly just in it for the fashion), but with a focus on layering, heavy fabrics, and dark colors, it’s not an easy one to translate to the summer of my tropical climate. So I’m experimenting with Light Academia instead. I use similar silhouettes and patterns to Dark Academia, but in lighter colors and fabric. I also added a pair of suspenders and use my brooch like a tie pin to highlight the academia/vintage/classic elements of the outfit. I think the outfit is a success, and it’s definitely given me some more ideas to try with my summer style!

Summer Layering

When the weather warms up, one of the things I always struggle with is how to make my outfits more interesting. During the cooler months, I can always rely on layering to play around with colors and textures, but that’s not so feasible in the summer. This year, however, with my newly purchased waistcoat, I have a summer layering item that doesn’t add too much bulk or weight. Of course, it only works with a lightweight waistcoat like this one, and only when it’s under 35 degrees Celsius (about 95F). Anything higher than that and I’m not even venturing outdoors, let alone worrying about having an interesting outfit.

Fall Boots

What’s this? Am I wearing… boots? That’s right. Although the rest of my outfit is still summery, the footwear is distinctly fall-like. The weather has cooled down enough now that oxfords and boots are replacing sandals and flats, and I’ve been itching to wear this pair ever since I’ve thrifted them, so as soon as it’s socially acceptable, I brought them out. I’ve wanted a pair of lace-up boots for a while, and these fit the bill perfectly. And apparently I wasn’t the only one who thought they were awesome – as I stopped at a red light, a lady pulled up next to me on her motorbikes and said “I love your shoes!” The light turned green and she roared off before I could say “Thank you, kind stranger,” but it definitely made my day.

Gold Roots

Here’s my outfit for this week’s SIA, inspired by Brazilian artist Janaina Mello Landini’s installation “Ciclotrama“. I went with the black-and-white theme of the installation, and added this gold brooch, which has both the gold touch of the frame and the root-like shape of the ropes. I thought about wearing my black t-strap heels to further mimic the ropes, but they look too heavy, so I went with these simple black pumps instead. However, I’m still kicking myself for not remembering my braided black belt – it would’ve been the perfect finishing touch! But well, not everything can be perfect, can it?

If you haven’t sent me your outfit, you still have until tomorrow, and don’t forget to come back on Wednesday to see other outfits inspired by this amazing installation!
