When it comes to Halloween costumes, I’m firmly in the camp of “practicality” over “accuracy”, meaning I would prefer to put together an outfit that I can wear on a normal day, using what I already have, and only inspired by the original, rather than putting together a cosplay look (see my Doctor Who costume or my “punk Eleven”-inspired outfit, for example.)
This year is no different. I knew there would be a gazillion Eddies, so even though I did wear my Hellfire shirt and leather jacket on Monday, I wanted to have a proper costume, and since my obsession with Joe Quinn is still very much alive and strong, I decided to go with another of his characters – Arthur Havisham from Dickensian. He has a lot of great Victorian dandy looks, but the show is so dark and dreary that you can’t see them properly most of the time. In the end, I went with this particular red jacket and floral waistcoat combo because you can actually see it in a behind-the-scene interview (I’m including the screenshot mostly because Joe’s smile is adorable) and I have items in my closet of similar colors. I know his trousers are dark gray, but these corduroy pants work better – again, practical over accurate – and I see them as a nod to his red velvet jacket too. Now, if I could only find a pocket watch and chain, it would be perfect.

For this week’s SIA, inspired by Carl Larsson’s “Karin at the Shore“, I knew I’d wear this floral waistcoat, as it’s perfect for the flowers in the painting – in fact, I think it even features the same lilies as the painting! For the rest of the outfit, I didn’t want anything too dark and heavy (it is the summer, after all), but I did want to reference the woman’s dress in some way. In the end, I went with this white lace top and navy pants, because if you look closely, there are white lace trims on her dress. The shoes were, I admit, an afterthought, so I just picked what went well with the outfit rather than referencing the painting, but this pair is neutral enough so they’re all right. All in all, I’m quite pleased with how the outfit turned out.
If you haven’t send me your outfits, you still have until tomorrow, and don’t forget to come back on Wednesday to see how everybody did!

Well, the unseasonably cool weather couldn’t last. We got some heavy rain last week, but now it’s warming up quickly. Before it gets completely scorching though, I managed to have one last hurrah, one last layered outfit – to be honest, it was a bit too warm for three layers, but as I mostly sat in an air-conditioned room (attending the thesis dissertation of the screenwriting students), it wasn’t bad. This outfit was built around the idea of pairing this waistcoat and blazer together, but I couldn’t find the right bottom to make it into one cohesive look. In the end, I was inspired by the costume of the Fifth Doctor on Doctor Who – more exactly, this outfit is a mix of his regular cricketer’s kit (the white jacket and tan trousers – his are striped though) and his floral waistcoat in the episode “Planet of Fire” (hence the post title). I even include a floral brooch as a nod to his celery boutonniere.

When the weather warms up, one of the things I always struggle with is how to make my outfits more interesting. During the cooler months, I can always rely on layering to play around with colors and textures, but that’s not so feasible in the summer. This year, however, with my newly purchased waistcoat, I have a summer layering item that doesn’t add too much bulk or weight. Of course, it only works with a lightweight waistcoat like this one, and only when it’s under 35 degrees Celsius (about 95F). Anything higher than that and I’m not even venturing outdoors, let alone worrying about having an interesting outfit.

Last fall/winter, there was one item of clothing that I searched and searched but couldn’t find: the waistcoat. I’ve wanted a waistcoat since seeing Jo’s costumes in the 2019 adaptation of Little Women, but as hard as I searched, I couldn’t find them anywhere, since they’re not exactly the trendiest of items. Then, at the end of the season, just as I was ready to give up the search, I came across not one, but two shops that sell waistcoats! By then, most of the nicer ones were sold out, though I still managed to grab a few. It’s almost too warm now to wear them, but I couldn’t wait, so here’s a floral one to make it more seasonally appropriate. I’m looking forward to the end of the year to wear the others, and perhaps to add some more to my collection!
