Adventures In Coloring

It seems I can’t walk into a bookstore without seeing a dozen of them. Usually the hipster in me would turn up her nose at what is so obviously a fad. But then I began to seriously consider buying one after I realized that, to unwind from work, I would do more work – like, if I get tired of my script reading, I would translate a book, or if I get tired of that, I would translate a movie. I needed a new hobby.
For colors, I wanted to use up all the watercolor supplies left over from my art class back in college; however, the paper of these books is not suitable for watercolors, so I decided to make my own.
I went online, found a website with free printable coloring pages (Googling “[blank] line drawing” also works), printed them out, and traced them with graphite paper onto my watercolor sketchbook. It’s a bit time-consuming, but the tracing alone is therapeutic enough, and if I made a mistake with the coloring, I could always trace it again. It’s kind of like painting without having to draw (which is great for me because I can’t draw.)
That one is my first try, so it’s kinda simple. Here are some more finished products:
I did print out a page from “Enchanted Forest“, but the intricate details are a pain to trace and don’t look that great with watercolors:
The realistic botanical illustrations are much more my style. I’m particularly proud of the berry ones:
Overall I still have a lot to learn, but I really like it. We’ll see how long I can keep it up, but maybe this coloring fad is not such a fad after all.
Cute!! Nicely done!! Love it!! Please check out my blog, share your thoughts and follow ❤️❤️
Wow!! These are awesome Salazar! Thanks for sharing.
As I’ve mentioned before, they started selling coloring books for adults at Akron’s art museum gift shop. And the other day, I seen some at Barnes & Noble. These would be great for me on days when I want to use my colors but can’t think of anything to draw or paint. I have a lot of art supplies that I’ve bought, some dating back to my college days, and most I have never used. A shame, I know, but true.
But these would be perfect for me on days when I don’t have enough imagination to make a postcard. Sometimes, even as an adult, I just enjoy coloring things!
These are lovely! What a great idea.
I color with my kids all the time and it really does put you in a meditative state. I also get that from knitting too. Not sewing. That just ramps up my blood pressure and makes me throw things.
Coloring is the BEST. And I love the idea of doing watercolors instead; watercolor is my favorite art medium, so now I’m going to have to try that site you linked for some good images to fill in! I can draw, but I am not patient enough to draw an image and then color it, so tracing is perfect for me, too!
Beautiful!!
You know what? I’m discovering how much I love coloring. I just recently bought an adult coloring book (along with a new box of crayons just for use of this activity) and I started coloring in it tonight; 20 minutes before heading to bed for the night. It’s really relaxing. It’s not the same as drawing my own stuff and trying to color it in. I find that I judge myself more when doing this and that only creates more stress for me. But with this, I can just color.
While I normally don’t like following the crowd of anything (I’m sort of a rebel, in case you couldn’t tell), this I think that I can get into. And now after my little coloring exercise, I am ready to lay myself down for a good night’s rest. Night all!
