More Chambray, More Neutrals

Another chambray outfit , which is inspired by this. I added the yellow belt and the leopard flats for some pop, because I feel I’ve been wearing neutrals too much lately for some reason. Actually I have a theory about that: I’ve noticed that in Hanoi people like to wear bright colors in winter. Coats in red are always sold out first, and clothing stores display mostly red stuff in their windows. Whenever I venture out of my hobbit hole, I’ve also seen coats in purple and yellow and teal, even the men prefer brown and navy over black or grey – again it goes back to our culture associating bright colors (like red) with celebrations and happiness. So I guess I dress in neutrals to stand out more in a sea of brights.

P/S: No, the post title is not a reference to “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems”. I almost made that joke but then it would be super lame, since I’ve never even listened to the song.

Lucky Color

I actually wore this last weekend when my sister and I went back to our hometown for a cousin’s engagement party. It was a very casual affair, not to mention we had to spend nearly 6 hours in the car, round-trip, hence the jeans. I still wanted to look celebratory though, so I picked my red coat – after all, it’s a color associated with good luck and celebration in most Eastern culture. In fact, in Vietnam, when somebody is lucky, we say that they have “red fortune.” Also, I’ve been wearing a lot of neutrals lately, so some color is good. As it turned out, the day was too warm for a heavy coat. Good thing I was wearing my red striped shirt too.

Winter Uniform

It was one of those days. You know, the kind of day when you stand in front of your full closet thinking “I have nothing to wear.” It’s ridiculous, even more so in my case because I have nowhere to go and thus it doesn’t matter what I wear. But I want to look at least like a functioning member of society instead of who I really am – a hermit who goes on Imdb to look up a movie reference, telling myself it’s for “work”, and ends up spending two hours on tumblr and Pinterest. So I reached for something that I know would work: button up, sweater, skinny jeans, and boots. Now I only need to figure out a go-to outfit for the summer…

What’s your go-to outfit?

Black And Blue

The weather has been kind of warm these past few days, which means I can reduce my layers by half. I could also finally wear this outfit that I came up with a while ago but thought would have to wait until spring. It’s one of many outfits involving a chambray shirt that I’m inspired to try. I’m having a bit of a chambray moment, actually – I thrifted this shirt a while ago when chambray first became trendy, but it seems I didn’t “discover” it until now. I may even have to get a new shirt. This one is nice and all, but it’s a little loose-fitting (it may be a boy’s shirt) and reminds me of what the prisoners wear in The Shawshank Redemption, especially when I button it up all the way like this. On the plus side, I might have figured out my next Halloween costume.

SIA Inspiration: Young Corn

It’s again Jess’ turn to pick the inspiration for this week’s Style Imitating Art, and she chose “Young Corn” by Grant Wood:

week02

The only Grant Wood painting I know is American Gothic, so thank you, Jess, for picking a less obvious work. I love this – the style reminds me of illustrations in my old English textbook, and those fluffy trees are just so… cute (how’s that for an attempt at art critique?) Anyway, be sure to send your outfit photos and/or links to Jess at animatedcardigan@gmail.com by the evening of January 28th. Have fun!
