All The Patterns
Posted: May 30, 2016 Filed under: Clothes, Style Imitating Art | Tags: animal print flats, black, black polka dot pants, brooch, style imitating art, white, white striped slouchy tee 4 CommentsI had a different outfit in mind for this week’s SIA, inspired by Charles Demuth’s “Spring“, but at the last moment I decided against it, because while it may copy some of the colors of the painting, it doesn’t capture the many patterns of the fabric samples. So I chose to a more casual outfit with all of the patterns instead – there are three patterns here (stripes, polka dots, and leopard print) – four if you count the floral print on my owl pin – and I keep the colors minimal to avoid being a walking fabric store. I’m happy with this – it captures the spirit of the painting, if not the exact colors and patterns.
Don’t forget to stop by Erin’s blog by Wednesday (a day late, since she has a pre-scheduled post on Tuesday) to see other interpretations of this painting!

Weekly Capsule 26.3: Recurring Storm
Posted: July 2, 2015 Filed under: Capsule, Clothes | Tags: black, black pants, black slip-ons, capsule summer/fall 2015, necklace, white, white striped slouchy tee 4 CommentsAfter a few insanely muggy days, the first hurricane of the season just hit Vietnam. Hanoi is far enough inland that it didn’t really affect us, save for a metric shit ton of rain (I managed to sneak these photos between two heavy rainstorms – it’s a simple outfit for running errands, but I like it.)
Speaking of storms, I’ve been having this weird recurring dream for at least a year now. The details may vary, but it always goes like this: I’m in some high place (usually a room in a tall building), watching the horizon, then some huge storm clouds or tornadoes start rising up from the horizon and rush toward me, and finally they hit the building I’m in with such a force that all the windows shatter. And it ends with either broken glass or pieces of hail around me. It’s not that weird when described like that; what’s weird for me is that it’s recurring – I never used to have recurring dreams. I wouldn’t call it a nightmare either, because in the dream I’m more excited/in awe at the display of natural forces than scared. I’m not big on dream interpretation, so I have no idea what it means. Maybe I’m secretly a storm chaser?

Weekly Capsule 26.1 & SIA: Tabby Cat
Posted: June 29, 2015 Filed under: Capsule, Clothes, Style Imitating Art | Tags: brooch, brown, brown flat sandals, capsule summer/fall 2015, gray, gray linen pants, style imitating art, white, white striped slouchy tee 1 CommentThis is the third SIA challenge in a row that I interpreted with a t-shirt, baggy pants, and flats. And I’m not going to change that any time soon because school’s out for the summer, so why not be comfortable, right? Besides, this is the sartorial interpretation of a cat on a chair, and it wouldn’t be appropriate for the feel of the painting if I wasn’t in something lazy and comfortable. It is a little bright compared to the inspiration painting, “Cat on a Chair” by Theophile Steinlen, but between the striped shirt (yes, another striped shirt. You can never have too many striped shirts, I always say), the gray pants, and brown sandals, I think it’s pretty close. I didn’t have either of my cats in the photos with me because they were busy sunning themselves and would get cranky if I woke them up, so I put on my cat brooch instead 😀
If you want to participate in SIA, there is still time to send me your submission; otherwise, check back tomorrow for the full round-up post!
