We’re having the first heatwave of the summer, hence my simple and breezy outfit. I know most style guides would advice you to wear dresses or shorts in the summer, but I actually find a loose-fitting shirt and pair of pants work better for me. You won’t have to worry about thigh rub like you would in a dress, and with long pants instead of shorts, you won’t have to apply so much sunscreen and there is less surface for the bugs to feed on too. I always recoil in horror when I see tourists wandering around in shorts and tank tops (yes, I’m aware that I’m technically wearing a tank top too.) Cover up, people! There’s a reason people in Vietnam dress like this when we go out.

Late Blossoms

My students gave me this cherry blossom brooch for International Women’s Day back in March, but I didn’t get around to wearing it until now.  And wearing it reminded me of the cherry blossoms at Lake Balboa Park near my apartment in LA (not to be confused with Balboa Park in San Diego).

If there is one thing I missed about living in LA, it’s the cherry blossoms at a park near my apartment building. Every year around March, I would spend almost all of my days off there, taking photos of the clouds of pink blossoms until my camera battery died. I even remember seeing some Japanese-American families there for blossom-viewing parties. You don’t get flowers like that in Vietnam (well, we do have plum blossoms and peach blossoms here around February, but you’d have to travel to the mountain region to see them in large quantities.) Guess I’ll just have to be content with some old photos then.

Japanese Inspired

The weather is warming up again (for the last time this season, I hope), so here are two simple looks. As the post title says, these are both inspired by Japanese street style – not any outfit in particular, but by several style blogs that I’ve been following. I used to be drawn to the classic silhouettes, bright colors, and all the patterns of vintage style (1940’s – 1950’s, to be exact), but now, while I still like looking at them, I don’t really want to wear them anymore. Instead, I prefer minimalism and more relaxed silhouettes, which is almost the exact opposite of vintage style. It’s funny how that changes, right?

I’m One With The Force

Happy Star Wars day! Anybody pumped for The Last Jedi? I’m always kinda disappointed that I only got into Star Wars after I already moved home, so I can’t discuss it with my film buff friends. Sure, we talk on Tumblr and Facebook, but it’s not the same. I may work at a film school, but my co-workers are hopeless when it comes to pop culture. When it comes to things like sci-fi and superheroes, I always end up talking to my students.

Anyway, the outfit is unrelated, but it looks like I’m channeling R2-D2 with my white, blue, and a touch of red. I’m also wearing my “Moon of Yavin” necklace (that’s what I’m calling it anyway), so I guess you can say my outfit is celebrating Star Wars too.

Tricksy Hobbitses

Sorry for the radio silence these past two days, my Internet died and I’ve been too busy to schedule my posts beforehand. But the Internet is back up now, and I’ll make it up with 5 posts next week. I’ve been skipping Wednesday for a few weeks because I don’t have enough material, but now I think I’ve saved up enough to get back to posting 5 times a week.

On to the outfit: the weather has been tricky lately (hence the Gollum post title, it seems appropriate for my mood). It suddenly warms up to upper 80’s temperature again, though it remains cool in the morning and at night. The answer to that is, of course, layering, like I did here, but I would certainly prefer it to stay cool all through the day. But I guess that’s global warming for you…

Sensory Underload

I think the main reason I tend to wear mostly monochromatic looks during the warmer months is that it’s so much easier to have sensory overload when it’s hot out. Your brain and your body are already boiling, so there is no need to assault your eyes (or other people’s eyes) with bright colors as well.

We’ve just entered our first real heat wave of the summer, and while it’s still pretty tame compared to last year (the temperature hasn’t reached 100 yet, and the heat index is still only around 100 to 110), I’m already disinclined to wear anything other than neutrals, and even my accessories are more streamlined. Not that I’ve been wearing much of anything else lately, but I do apologize if it gets a little boring around here in the next month or so.

I wore this to see Captain America: Civil War last weekend (yes, we got it a week earlier than the US, neener-neener) and as you can see from my red, white, and blue outfit, I’m firmly on #teamcap. As for the movie, I certainly enjoyed it more than the mess that is Age of Ultron, but it definitely suffers from the “too many superheroes” problem. I could have done without Vision, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, and War Machine (Falcon is awesome, and Ant-Man and the new Spider-Man are funny, so I’ll let them slide, even though I am so fed up with yet another Spidey, and Black Panther is pretty important to the plot so he can stay too.) On the other hand, I could have done with more Black Widow, who is criminally underused here. But then again, everything could have done with more Black Widow.
