Wrinkled

Day 2 of Take One, Pass It On! Sorry my blazer is such a wrinkled mess, but it’s linen, so short of not moving my arms at all, there really is no way I can keep it smooth.

Anyway, the arrow pin is because I just found out that Catching Fire is getting a release here in Vietnam, which makes me extremely happy, even if it’s my least favorite book out of the trilogy. The books were still translated and published in Vietnamese, but the first movie was banned from the theaters here (since it features kid-on-kid violence, I can understand why they got squeamish about it, even though banning it is totally missing the point of the movie.) It was a good thing I managed to catch it before I moved.

Take One, Pass It On 2.0

striped shirt navy blazer blue jeans brown ankle boots by 14 shades of grey

Back in March I did a challenge called Take One, Pass It On by Sarah’s Real Life, where you take an item from an outfit, be it a piece of clothing or accessories, and rewear it the next day, and keep doing it for an entire month. Sarah has started the challenge again for the month of November, and I decided to participate again, because I remember now how easy it is to put together an outfit when you already have an item to build on.

So my first “pass it on” item are these ankle boots. When I first thrifted them I didn’t wear them much, but now I’m beginning to see how versatile they can be. Sadly, they’re literally falling apart, so maybe I’ll have to look for a replacement pair soon. And here I thought my quest for boots is done…

TOPIO The Finale

It’s the end of March and also the end of Take One, Pass It On. It’s been so fun that I’m tempted to keep on doing it. I rewear stuff all the time, but as a fashion blogger I always feel this pressure not to repeat myself, this nagging thought of “Oh I just wear those jeans yesterday, I should wear something else today then…” Which is silly. And will leave you with a heap of worn-but-not-quite-ready-for-laundry clothes at the end of the week. The TOPIO challenge helps me stop worrying about that.

Neverwhere

I’m not feeling this outfit. So please excuse me, I’m going to go listen to the Neverwhere radio play. They’ve got such an awesome cast – James McAvoy, Natalie Dormer, Christopher Lee, Anthony Head… And to top it off, Benedict Cumberbatch playing Islington! Now if they can just make a movie or mini-series out of it to replace the low-budget one from 1996, I’ll be a happy panda.

Good Morning Joan

I’m not much of a pencil-skirt kind of girl. It always makes me feel like an office worker, which I’m not, and don’t want to be. So I tried pairing this skirt with a T-shirt to dress it down a little, but this skirt pretty much requires heel, so I ended up feeling a little bit like Joan from Mad Men in this outfit. Of course Joan rarely wears a print, and her outfits are much more impeccably matched than this, but the silhouette is similar. And since Season 6 is about to premiere soon (in 11 days! And 4 days until Game of Thrones!!! Gah, why must all of my shows return at the same time?), I figure it’s appropriate.

Roses In A Vase

I almost thought I would have to stop the Take One, Pass It On challenge for another round of Style Imitating Art, but when I looked at the inspiration painting, “Yellow Roses in a Vase” by Gustave Caillebotte, I saw that it has a bit of greyish blue in it that my chambray shirt can mimic. So here’s my interpretation of it. The skirt is a lucky find too; it was my mom’s, and I was just thinking I’d wear it before it gets too warm for a corduroy pencil skirt, but then it just happens to work pretty well for the painting (even though those are pink roses and not yellow.)

Check out Jess’ blog to see all the other outfits inspired by this painting!

Today is also the first day of Franziska’s 5 Days, 5 Ways challenge, where you link up to show 5 (or 3, or 10) different ways to wear a particular item. I’d completely forgotten about it until I saw Fran’s post, but luckily my chambray shirt gets a lot of wear. Here are 4 more ways I’ve worn it in the past:

Blog Worthy

Recently the lovely Franziska of Franish has talked about “blog worthy” outfits, which got me thinking about the whole idea of dressing up for the sole purpose of taking pictures and posting them. I guess there’s a certain amount of dressing up on my blog, but that’s because if I didn’t dress up for the blog, I probably would take a leaf out of Jennifer Lawrence’s book đŸ˜› I’ve mentioned this before, but putting on real clothes really puts me in the “work” mindset. When I’m working from home and there are distractions everywhere, I need all the help I can get to concentrate.

So yeah, I make sure that my outfits are “blog worthy”, but that for me simply means anything I wouldn’t feel uncomfortable wearing to an actual office or to go out. Sometimes I put more effort in, sometimes less so (like these two outfits for example). Just because I have the luxury of playing dress-up doesn’t mean that I’m going to be unrealistic about it and dress to the nines every day so I could have “blog worthy” photos.

My dad bought this scarf for me from Cambodia; it’s a slightly modernized version of the traditional Cambodian krama (checkered scarf; Vietnamese people in the Mekong Delta also have something similar, though ours is more simple, usually just with black-and-white pattern.) I just looped it in a circle in the first outfit, and in the second one I used this knot.

Keep one side of the scarf longer. Loop this longer side twice and tuck the short side in until it’s hidden

Take the tip of the longer side and tuck it into the opposite side. Done!
