That Time Of The Year

See the grass behind me? We’re drying it for our hens, since they’re going to start laying eggs soon. It’s been a busy couple of days, because it’s that time of the year again when almost everybody in my family has to leave for a conference or some sort of business trip and I’m sole caretaker for the garden and the chickens (the cats and dog don’t count, I don’t let anybody else feed them.) I wouldn’t complain, except that I’m sick with my annual turn-of-the-season cold, so everything is just… blergh. I’m going to bed now. Later.

P/S: I realize this is the second time in a week I’ve worn this belt and shoes combo, but there’s something about a classic silhouette like this that makes me want to bring out the matchy-matchy accessories.

Workhorse

work·horse noun

1 : a horse used chiefly for labor as distinguished from driving, riding, or racing
2 a (1) : a person who performs most of the work of a group task
     (2) : a hardworking person
b : something that is markedly useful, durable, or dependable

According to the above definition, this skirt has definitely become my workhorse. Let’s see – A-line silhouette? Check. Modest length? Check. Pleats? Check. Neutral color that does with everything? Check. And my deal breaker – pockets? Check. No wonder it’s my favorite.

That being said, I am trying to incorporate my other skirts into my wardrobe, especially since it’s getting warmer around here (goodbye June Gloom, I’ll miss you…)

Neon + Neutral

I consider my closet to be well-stocked when I had two fashion challenges in a row which at first I wasn’t sure if I could do, but then I realized I do have the necessary items after all. The first is the Everybody Everywear Lace challenge, and the second is the Bloggers Do It Better Neon + Neutral challenge.

At first I was just as stumped by this as I was by the Lace challenge. I don’t have any neon-colored thing in my closet – the closest thing is my fuchsia belt, which is too dark to be counted as neon. But then I remembered my hot pink suspenders (thank you Debbi for making me buy them!)

So I approached this challenge pretty much in the same way as I did the Lace challenge – I don’t wear a lot of it, so I’m just going to accent with it. And yeah, strictly speaking, my striped tunic isn’t “neutral”, but the stripes are small enough that it still works.

P/S: My boss said he liked my suspenders 😀

Friday I’m Not Even Trying

Once again, the weather has interfered with my dressing. I’d planned to wear a dress today. When I woke up and saw that it was all gray and foggy outside, I thought I could still wear the dress, maybe with tights or something. But then I told myself, “Eh, no. It’s Friday. It’s not worth it.” And so I went back to my old favorite – jeans and a tunic.

Also, I can just hear Tom and Lorenzo saying “Get your hands out of your pockets.”

So, not the most exciting outfit, but I’m comfy and my legs aren’t freezing. Yes, ironically, when the rest of the country is experiencing a heat wave, LA has been enjoying some nice June Gloom weather these past weeks. It’s a bit overcast but cool and humid, just the way I like it (and as I typed those words, I asked myself, for the umpteenth time, why am I living here and not in England? *sighs*…)

Tunic: thrifted (I’ve tried and tried to make this work as a dress. I gave up. The problem is not that it’s too short (it’s not), but the buttons don’t go far enough, know what I mean? If it’s a danger for me to sit down in, then it’s not a dress. It’s a tunic.)

Small Steps

Pending the arrival of my camera remote control, I thought I’d share a picture of my closet, so you guys can see what I’m talking about:

See what I mean? I’m in need of an intervention.

Anyway, yesterday and today I went shopping, and here’s the fruit of my labor:

Hat and flats (hey, that rhymes): Payless
Striped and blue flowered shirts/dresses/tunics (I’ll probably wear both as tunics): thrifted
Flowered tunic: Handmade (it’s a store)

Yes, I know the three shirts are the same style (I have like 6 of them now.) Yes, I know I said no more stripe and no more blue. But at least the striped shirt has some colors and the blue shirt is a print. Small steps. I’m getting there.
