One Dress Two Ways

I’m definitely wearing more dresses this summer. Usually, I don’t worry much about my summer style, because at this time of year, my work would be winding down as we prepare for the summer break, but due to the pandemic, we are still playing catch-up and it looks like we’re going to be working all summer. This means I have to step up my style a little, but dresses are an easy way to look put-together. Before, I used to stay away from dresses because one dress is just one silhouette, but now, thanks to all these cotton dresses I recently thrifted, I can vary my looks without feeling like I’m repeating myself.

Here’s my outfit for this week’s SIA, inspired by Ingres’s “Portrait of Comtess d’Haussonville“. I got this dress from an end-of-summer sale, and immediately knew it would be perfect for this challenge with its different shades of grayish blue. I added my brooch to mimic the gold bracelet and ring the Countess is wearing as well as the mirror frame, and my shoes are perfect to mimic the red velvet bow on her hair. I even tried posing like her but I ended up looking silly, so here are some normally-posed photos instead 😛

Wine Red

For this week’s SIA, inspired by a poster for Cordial Médoc liqueur, I know I’d wear my maroon printed dress and heels, since their color perfectly mimics the red grapes in the poster. There is yellow in there as well, but neither of my yellow things – a scarf and a belt – looks right with the dress, so in the end, I decided to forgo the yellow and just added my grape bunch brooch to finish off the outfit. Besides, there are touches of yellow in the print of my dress anyway, so I’d figure it would do. All in all, I’m quite happy with how it turns out. Graduation Ceremony

Happy belated Fourth of July to my US readers! Hope you guys had a great celebration.

Last week, I’ve shared what I wore to be on the thesis committee, and this week, here’s what I wore to my students’ graduation ceremony. It’s a semi-formal occassion, so of course, I brought out my traditional Vietnamese áo dài. I was quite happy to realize that my shoes match the buttons and the stitching on the tunic almost exactly, and they added a nice pop of color. For a sentimental touch, I also added a brooch that my students gave me for Teacher’s Day last year.

The students, however, all decided to wear dresses instead, and I don’t blame them – áo dài can be uncomfortable/difficult to move around in (mine isn’t because it’s made of linen and has a looser fit.) My only problem with wearing áo dài, in fact, is that it’s a set, which means you can’t really mix and match it (I do wear the pants separately though). But it’s for special occassions only, so it’s fine.
