Back To School, Pandemic Style

As I mentioned in my post on Wednesday, school has started again this week, and it’s the first time I taught a class in-person again in about… gosh, I don’t even remember how long. A year? Technically, the latter half of the last semester was in-person too, but I just kept teaching online because, as I teach writing, it’s actually easier for me to teach online than in person. But there is no escaping it now, and just in time for a new wave of COVID too (yay…) Everybody keeps saying that the new variants are not as serious, but I’m taking no chances and sticking to my face masks (almost literally) for now.

Feeding In The Light

Here’s my outfit for this week’s SIA, inspired by “Feeding in the Light” by Jerry Garcia of Grateful Dead. When I saw this painting, I immediately knew I’d wear my yellow skirt. It’s the brightest item in my closet, and yellow is a major part of the painting. For the rest of it, I struggled a bit, but then I remembered my colorful plaid dress – the colors are a bit darker than those in the painting, but they’re pretty close – so I decided to wear it as a top. I then paired them with my green vintage shoes, because the tassels look a bit like the green creature in the painting (an octopus), and added my crab brooches to go with the marine theme. The result is definitely not something I’d wear normally, but that’s the fun of SIA, and I’m happy with it.

Cows In Landscape

This week’s SIA, inspired by Gunta St√∂lzl‘s tapestry “Cows in Landscape”, is truly a challenge and a half. If it was during the cooler months, I could try some layering and some sweaters/socks to reflect the colors and texture of the piece, but since it’s still pretty warm, I had to resort to mimicking the colors instead. In the end, I chose this dress because there are some stripey bits at the corners of the tapestry that remind me of this plaid, and to add some textures and colors, I paired it with my braided belt and clogs. Finally, for a nod at the title, I wore my cow necklace too, though my cow is a far cry from the cows in the tapestry. But hey, I’m nothing if not committed.

Simultaneous Dress

We’re still working from home, so I’m strictly in a T-shirt-and-pajama-bottom capsule wardrobe these days (with the occasional button-up when I have an online class to teach). As you can imagine, this puts a damper on my options for SIA outfits. Luckily, while looking through my backlogged posts, I found this outfit. It’s not an exact match to this week’s inspiration, Sonia Delaunay’s “Simultaneous Dresses“, the colorful plaid is a good nod to the colors and graphic patterns in the painting, and my blue oxford shoes are a good match to the blue background as well. So all in all, I’m happy with it.
