Welcome To The Jungle

No, it’s not a jungle, but our backyard garden. It’s actually a lot more accessible than the last time I was home, when it used to look like this:

The mosquito level though, is still the same (there’s a river right behind it, which doesn’t help.) So… it’s probably not a good idea to take photos down there in a V-neck tee and shorts. Despite having slathered myself in bug repellent, I still had to dance/jump around while setting up the shots, otherwise my legs would turn into a mosquito feast.

Anyway, this is Outfit #1 for this summer’s 30×30 challenge. I opted for something simple, and it wasn’t until I put the outfit together that I realized I took the color scheme from this picture of Audrey Tatou for Marie Claire Russia.

Homage To The Square

I took a break from the 30 Days of Dresses for this week’s Style Imitating Art. This is an easy one, since the inspiration, Homage to the Square: Blue, White, Grey by Josef Albers (who, incidentally, was my friend Debbi’s great-uncle), has all of my favorite colors and the clean lines that translate well into an outfit.

The striped shirt is a no-brainer, and even though my shorts are more mint than blue, it’s close enough in the color wheel. The only part in the painting that stumped me a bit is the silvery grey, which I tried to represent in my flats, but I felt it was not enough. Then I remembered my glass pendant I got from Venice – it not only has the right color, but the right shape too. It’s the perfect finishing touch.

Here’s Jess’ interpretation – I love the mixing of stripes. And I have serious skirt envy too 🙂

Flats: thrifted, Necklace: gift shop in Venice (it’s the zodiac symbol of my sign, Leo)

Grazed Knees

This outfit cost a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. Well, tears not so much, but certainly blood and sweat. You see, for this month’s EBEW, “Pastels”, I decided to take a chance on mint. I figured as long as the color is not close to my face, I’d be fine. So I dug out my old pair of white shorts and dyed them in a light shade of teal, mixed with a splash of green. So far, so good. But then…

I’d wanted to pair them with my floral wedges. However, I had a little accident going up the stairs, scraped up my knees (you can kinda see it in the photos) and busted the wedges. I tried telling myself that they’re too heavy to pack anyway, but still, tears. So I decided to pair the shorts with polka dots instead – I had my favorite ice cream flavor, mint chocolate chip, in mind. Only I didn’t have any polka dot top. So I spent an afternoon breaking my back painting polka dots on this T-shirt (using this tutorial). I guess when I’m not allowed to shop, I need to channel that… urge into something else, which is why I’ve been dying and refashioning like mad these past few weeks.

Happily, everything came out right in the end. Even if I did put way more effort into this outfit than necessary.

When The Wind Picked Up

We’re having a mini heat wave here, due to what I think is the Santa Ana winds (when I looked it up, I realized that in Vietnam we have the same kind of hot, dry wind; only we call it “Laotian wind” because it blows in from Laos.) Thankfully it’s only for two days; it will cool down again by the weekend. And to think, this time last week it was all rainy and nice. Oh LA weather, what are we going to do with you?

Confession: I’m wearing boots despite of the heat because my legs are… shall we say, the opposite of follicly challenged 😛 I only bring out the shaving kit when I absolutely have to, so there’s no point now, when I know I’m going to be wearing tights again soon.

Oh Simple Thing

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on – Somewhere Only We Know (Keane)

T-shirt: thrifted
Cardigan: Merona (Target) thrifted
Skinny: Charlotte Russe, remixed
Converse: Shoecity, remixed
Belt: thrifted, remixed

This may be the simplest outfit I’ve worn since starting the blog. And this is how I normally dressed before starting the blog – jeans, a T-shirt, sneakers, and a cardigan. The only difference is that before my cardigan would be either black or gray, and my jeans probably wouldn’t be skinny.

Am I regressing to my old ways? I’d like to think not. Sometimes I just don’t want to think too much about what I wear, which can be the problem when you first start out as a style blogger (over-thinking every single outfit) – hence the lyric from “Somewhere Only We Know.” But hey, at least the cardigan has some interest to it, right?

Also, sorry if the colors are kinda off in the photos. It’s really bright out today. I tried hard not to frown by posing like this…

… but in the end I just thought, Ah, forget it, I’m stepping into the shades. (Actually I thought “F*** it” but that wouldn’t be PG. My mom reads this blog too :P)
