When I did closet inventory back in March, I didn’t include these shorts because they didn’t fit me that well, and I only wore them once last summer. This summer, though, the weather has been so incredibly hot that I decided to give the shorts another go, and lo and behold, they fit me again! That shows how hot it’s been – I’ve lost at least a couple of pounds of water weight due to the heat. The weight will return in the winter, but for now, welcome back, shorts.

We have a storm approaching, so it’s been insanely humid and muggy these past few days. Good thing our entire house and garden was recently sprayed with mosquito repellent, which means that I no longer have to douse myself in bug spray every time I step outside, and I can wear shorts and sleeveless tops without worrying about turning into a walking buffet. It’s timely too, because today Bri of Work Clothes, I Suppose is having her Third Thursday Thread link-up, and the theme is, you guess it, shorts.
I can’t decide if I like this better with the shirt tucked in or not though. Wait, no, actually I do. I wore it untucked, but when I got up from my desk to take pictures, I realized that the shirt tail had wrinkled like crazy, so I had to tuck it in to hide it.

This is not the most blog-worthy outfit, not even close, but it is the best I can do in the situation. It has been in the upper 90’s here for over a week, and that’s just the actual temperature. The heat index is always in the triple digits – it’s 110 today, and yesterday it was actually close to 120. So when I bike to work, I wear my baggiest, lightest pants and blouse (it actually helps to cover yourself up, bare skin is just begging to get burned), and at home, where I don’t have to step outside much except to feed the chickens in the morning and afternoon, it’s roughly this. I still wanted to post this though, because after realizing how the blog is looking like a meteorologist’s logs, I thought I’d document this heat wave for posterity (meaning myself next year). Plus I want to participate in Bri’s Third Thursday Threads, since the theme is sandals.

Just a simple outfit to end the week. I want to wear shorts more often in the summer, but I tend to reach for a long-sleeved shirt (or at least 3/4 length) when I’m wearing shorts, and in the summer that’s just not practical. For some reason I find pairing a short-sleeved shirt with shorts kind of… awkward-looking. I’ve tried it a few times before, and the proportion always looks off to me. I think the long-sleeved shirt balances out the shorts much better. And don’t even get me start on sleeveless shirt with shorts. Others can pull it off, but on me it will looks like I forget to put on proper clothes. Is it because of how my body is shaped, or is it entirely in my head?

First, a quick word on the “feather” portion of the post: this is my attempt to bring some interest to a simple shirt-and-shorts outfit, by adding a colorful pair of sneakers and a statement belt. I would’ve liked it better if the belt and the shoes aren’t fighting each other though.

Now on to the “asparagus” – it is the inspiration for next week’s Style Imitating Art, Still Life with Asparagus by Adriaen Coorte. I’ve always been a fan of the Dutch/Flemish still life paintings of 17th and 18th century, but most of them have such an abundance of colors and details, which would be near impossible to recreate in an outfit. So when I came across this simple yet striking piece, I decided to pick it for SIA (and also because I have a shirt that color :P)
Send me your outfit photos by Sunday, June 3. Have fun!
