What Day Is It?

Sorry for the no-show on Wednesday and Thursday; I just didn’t have anything to post. This year the Lunar New Year and the actual New Year (we sometimes call it the “Western New Year” or the “Solar New Year”, to differentiate) are so close to each other – only two weeks apart – so I’m in that weird twilight zone, like the one between Christmas and New Year, when you have no idea what day it is and what you’re supposed to be doing. Not a great feeling for creativity.

I think that translates into my outfit too. Everything is casual and practical, but then you get to the brooch and it’s a total needle-scratch. I have no idea what I was thinking when I put it on. Nothing, probably. Putting on a brooch is now almost an automatic action for me.

My First Leather Jacket

During my last week in Amsterdam, I went into a Zara to look for something for my sister. I didn’t find anything there (I did later end up buying a sweater for her from another store), but this leather jacket caught my eyes. Now, a leather jacket is one of those items often featured on the “must have” list of a well-stocked closet that I never feel is truly necessary. I don’t live in a climate that calls much for a leather jacket, and it’s a bit edgier than my usual style.

Of course, I’m wearing it right now, so you know where this story is going – I bought the jacket anyway. In my defense, it was 75% off (!!!), and real leather to boot. Also, perhaps it was I bought it because every girl around me was sporting a leather jacket (they do love their leather jackets in Europe), or perhaps because I had just read that book on Neil Gaiman and all the talk about his ubiquitous black leather got to my head. Either way, here is my first (and possibly only) leather jacket, and I’m hoping I can wear it more often and in more creative ways than this. And hey, it would be perfect if I ever want to dress up as Jessica Jones again!

Black & White Trees

I hope that all my East Coast readers are safe and sound. We’ve been having a pretty severe cold snap too (it was in the 40’s!!! There was snow in the mountains! That kind of temperature is probably nothing for you guys, but it’s positively arctic for our tropical climate), so stay warm everybody!

Anyway, this was taken last week, when it was still warm enough for me to take photos outside. It’s for SIA, inspired by Ansel Adams’ “Aspens, Northern New Mexico”. Since I already wore an outfit that would be perfect for SIA by accident, I had to scramble to find something that doesn’t look too similar. In the end, though, I took the same approach – gray sweater/sweatshirt, gray coat, black shoes. Sadly my black jeans are in the wash, but I think these dark navy jeans would do too. Add on top of that a black-and-white scarf, gray socks, and a silver leaf brooch, and we have a not-too-shabby interpretation of the photo, if I do say so myself.

Remember to drop by Jess’ blog to see more interpretations of this photo.

Weekly Capsule 52.1: Come To The Dark Side

I wore this last week to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I must’ve been subconsciously influenced by the movies, because as I was taking photos, I realized these were the colors of the “dark side” – black and red.

This is a bit embarrassing to confess, but up until last week, I had never seen the original Star Wars trilogy all the way through. I’ve seen bits and pieces on TV, and of course I knew all about the pop culture significance, but I never watched the entire thing. So before the new movie, I did a marathon of Episode IV, V, and VI (I like to pretend that the prequels didn’t happen). Now, usually when I watch these classic movies so late in the game, I would appreciate them but never become a fan. With Star Wars, though, I was completely won over. It’s epic and exciting and funny and everything that the nerd in me loves. So much so that by the time I saw The Force Awakens, I was tearing up at the opening scroll.

Needless to say, I freaking love the movie (already saw it twice.) Rey is badass (please please please don’t give her a romance in the next films), Finn and Poe are adorable, and all the callbacks to originals are great. I’ve heard complaints that it is too similar to Episode IV, but I think it’s a smart choice – it caters to fans of the originals while ushering in a new generation at the same time.

My only quibble is Adam Driver as the bad guy. He’s too cute to be the new Darth Vader. But, depending on his arc over the trilogy, he may turn out OK. We’ll see. Still, what’s with the casting of these young hipster actors as sci-fi villains anyway? Like Jesse Einsenberg as Lex Luthor, WTF?

Weekly Capsule 46.3: Three Seasons

See what I meant about the up-and-down weather? We’ve had three seasons in just one week. In the beginning of the week it was rainy and chilly and fall-like. The middle of the week was hot and humid. And now suddenly there’s a cold snap. And of course, it’s not going to last more than a day and next week is going to be warm again. By now I’m convinced winter is not coming this year, despite what Game of Thrones has been telling us. Maybe it’ll come when The Winds of Winter is released? 😛

Weekly Capsule 10.4: Skirt Edition

Well, I said I was going to try these boots with skirt, so here we are. I… like them here better than in yesterday’s outfit, but now the rest of the outfit looks kind of frumpy, no? I don’t know. I guess I’m just in a cranky mood today because it’s been raining for too long, plus it’s that time of the year again when my script reading job gets super busy and my brain hurts from reading too much. I would want to say that it’s going to be better next week, but the weather is warming up, and for us that means terrible humidity (I’m talking about the-walls-are-sweating-the-floor-is-sweating-everything-is-sweating level of humidity here), so… no. It won’t be better.

Anyway, this was my last chance to try these boots before putting them away until next winter (again: warming up next week), but I haven’t decided if they’re a keeper yet. Thoughts?

Weekly Capsule 10.3: High-heeled Boots

gray sweatshirt mustard jeans high heeled boots by 14 shades of grey

I almost didn’t take pictures today because it was rainy and miserable, as it has been the whole week, as it has always been at the beginning of spring here in Hanoi – you can just see how humid it is in the fogged up photos. But my sister just swapped me these boots, and I’d like to show them off. In hindsight though, the outfit is not great. I’m not used to wearing high-heeled boots, plus I just threw them on without thinking how well they go with the rest (other than the fact that they helped me avoid the mud), so the outfit feels a little awkward. Maybe tomorrow I’ll try them with a skirt to see if that works better.
