Perfect Condition

The last few days before the Lunar New Year (and during the holiday, in fact) were unseasonably warm and dry, fall-like instead of spring/winter, so I was able to change up my outfit formula a bit. It’s the most “blog-worthy” outfit I’ve worn in a while, even though it’s not that different from my usual formula of sweater + coat + jeans. At least the shirt and blazer are a nice change and the brooch is fun, and everything works together instead of feeling forced.

It just further proves the cliche that all style bloggers love the fall. When it’s too cold or too hot, I have to focus on staying warm/cool, so there isn’t much room for sartorial creativity. This kind of weather is perfect (even if it’s unseasonal.)

Belated Christmas

You know that weird limbo week between Christmas and New Year when you don’t know what day it is and what you’re supposed to do? It’s like that for us now, except it’s a whole month between Christmas/New Year and the Lunar New Year. We don’t have an official New Year celebration, but we do get a day off, and then it just kind of bleeds into the preparation for the Lunar New Year. It’s even more confusing at school because that was the end of our fall semester and now the new semester has started but nobody really wants to work because our minds are all on that long break.

Basically, we’re all tired and want a break, is what I’m saying.

Anyway, this was what I actually wore for Christmas – it was a normal working day for us, so I just celebrated by adding a Christmas tree brooch to my blazer.

Speaking of which, check out this awesome tree at our school – can you guess what it’s made of? That’s right, it’s 35mm film! Only at a film school, right?

Modern Fashion Plate

This is my outfit for this week’s SIA, inspired by the 1886 fashion plate of Scandinavian magazine Freja. OK, I have to admit that I actually put this outfit together before Jen sent the inspiration, but this fit the inspiration so well that I decided to use it for SIA too. My plaid blazer and striped top (my “Edwardian shirt” may have been a better choice, but I’ve worn it a lot lately, so this would do too) mimic the white dress with plaid trims, while the pattern on my brown boots can be seen as an echo of the brown lace dress. I would love to be able to wear an actual 1880’s dress for this SIA, but this is a good, real-world interpretation of the inspiration, and I’m happy with it.
