Suits
Posted: March 18, 2022 Filed under: Clothes | Tags: black, black oxfords, brooch, gray, gray plaid baggy pants, gray plaid blazer, white, white polka dot blouse 1 CommentI’ve mentioned in a previous post that despite my love for menswear, I’ve never been drawn to the idea of a suit, because I like mixing patterns and textures too much to build an entire outfit around a suit (I prefer skirts over dresses for the same reason – more possibilities for mix-and-match.) Case in point: I bought this suit a while ago, but have never worn the blazer and pants together, partly because of my aforementioned aversion for pant suits, but also because I couldn’t think of what shirt to wear with them. Now that I’ve got this blouse that would add some interest to the outfit, I decided to take the plunge. The verdict? I didn’t hate it, but truth be told, I’d still prefer it if I was wearing them separately :))
Between Flowers And Insects
Posted: February 26, 2021 Filed under: Clothes | Tags: black, black-and-silver oxfords, brooch, gray, gray plaid baggy pants, green, green jacket, green turtleneck, socks Leave a commentEver since I discovered a local Facebook sellers that specializes in secondhand costume jewelry, I’ve accumulated a lot of brooches… and I mean a lot. So, in an attempt to wear more of them, I’m doing just that – wearing more than just one brooch in an outfit, I mean. I’m still quite new to the art of brooch clustering (is that a thing? I’d say it’s a thing), and so far I’ve only clustered them according to theme – like all fruits together, or here, all insects (and one reptile) together. I’m going to play around and see if I can come up with more combinations – perhaps with similar/complementary colors and textures, or all sparkly? – because it is really fun.
The rest of the outfit I kept simple, but I couldn’t resist adding to the natural theme from my green jacket and the insect brooches with these floral socks (a gift from a co-worker, who knows I love fun socks.)
Ladybird
Posted: April 1, 2020 Filed under: Book/Movie/TV Reviews, Clothes | Tags: black, black oxfords, blue, brooch, gray plaid baggy pants, movie, navy cableknit sweater, red, white, white short sleeve shirt 4 CommentsIt’s April Fools, but I think the time we’re living in is a massive joke already so there’s no need to dwell on that, right? Anyway, this was my last proper “work outfit” before I started working from home. It’s simple, so I added some interest with my ladybird pin.
And because there is nothing else in the outfit to talk about: I finally got around to watching Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women (I was reminded of it because, of course, Lady Bird is also a Greta Gerwig movie starring Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chamalet.) Maybe I’m partial to the 1994 version with Winona Ryder and Christian Bale (even the 1949 version with June Allyson and Peter Lawford isn’t bad), but I found this version kind of… boring. I appreciate the attempt to make Laurie + Amy make sense, but I’m still not entirely convinced (I’m a steadfast Laurie + Jo shipper), and I think the non-linear structure robs the story of its emotional impact. Plus I absolutely hate the costume design (just because the Marches are poor doesn’t mean they have to be dressed like a bunch of ragamuffins and running around with their hair down and their pants showing.)
A Whale Of A Time
Posted: November 15, 2019 Filed under: Clothes | Tags: brooch, brown, gray, gray layered sweatshirt, gray plaid baggy pants, maroon monk shoes Leave a commentI’m very excited about the cool weather – it’s sunny in the photos, but it’s actually pretty crisp – and this smiling whale brooch perfectly captures my mood (my sister just went on a trip and this is her present for me. She knows me well.) Look at how content he is! I know I’m going to whine in about a month or so when the cold snaps start arriving and the days are gray and depressing, but for now, I’m enjoying myself.
Shoe-Mad
Posted: May 24, 2019 Filed under: Clothes | Tags: black, black tee, black-and-silver oxfords, gray, gray plaid baggy pants, necklace 4 CommentsThis may sound like a total stereotype, but like most women, I have a problem with shoes. As in I have too many shoes. And yet I still can’t seem to resist a new pair. Like this one. When I saw it in the store, I was just like SpongeBob going “I don’t need it, I don’t need it, I definitely don’t need it.” I mean, I really don’t. I have enough oxfords in every color of the rainbow (well, not exactly… oh gods I’m giving myself ideas), and a pair of patent black-and-silver oxfords wouldn’t fill any hole in my closet. But they hit that sweet spot between classic, vintage, and whimsical that is exactly my style, so in the end, just like SpongeBob, I screamed “I NEED IT!!!” (not literally) and bought them.
I justified it by saying that the patent leather would make them easier to wear in the rain, but that’s just an excuse. I bought them because I like them, and I can’t wait to wear them. In the end, isn’t that the best reason to buy something though?
