Swan Lake

Man, I can’t believe it’s December already, and 2013 is all but over. I haven’t accomplished much this year (and definitely failed miserably at my NY Resolutions) but I guess I feel that way because I haven’t done anything big, I just go on with my regular jobs. Speaking of which, I do have some pretty exciting news to share with you guys: I just got a writing job! I’m going to rewrite the first 10 episodes in a historical drama series about the Indochina War. I’m super excited, not just because it’s my first professional gig, but also because as far as modern Vietnamese history goes, it’s one of my favorite eras.

Anyway, this outfit is for this week’s SIA, inspired by Chris van Allsburg’s illustration for Swan Lake. It’s pretty self-explanatory, so I’m just going to direct you guys to Jess’ blog so you can see how others interpreted this painting.

Twee As F**k

When I first tried this outfit on, I wore the collar the right way (as a Peter Pan collar) with a brooch, and I had different shoes on. I looked like I just stepped out of a 1950’s children book’s illustration. Not a good look. I admit that I do like the twee style now and then, but I’m not comfortable wearing it – way too bubbly for my personality. So off went the brooch, the shoes got switched to boots and a belt was added. The result may look a little off-balanced, but at least I don’t feel like an overgrown 5-year-old (says the girl who still watches SpongeBob Squarepants.)

I’ve been sitting in front of the computer for 15 minutes trying to think of a post title and came up with none that didn’t sound lame or cheesy. My brain is taking a break, apparently. Anyway, here’s day 2 of Take One, Pass It On, and probably the second or third time I found a shirt to wear with this dress just from seeing them hang together in the closet (that almost sounds like I walked in on my clothes having a party or something :P) Funny, when I bought this dress I didn’t think of it as a staple piece, and it’s proving to be more and more versatile. But then it’s chambray, and much like a chambray shirt, it goes with everything.

Dark Roman Wine

This sweater is another hand-knitted one from my mom’s college day. The maroon, uh, excuse me, oxblood color (shut up) is so on trend (shut up shut up) that I had to ask my mom if she could pass it on to me. Kidding. I wasn’t thinking about its the trendiness (and it’s not even real maroon anyway, just dark red, hence the post title) so much as the fact that it’s super warm and goes with everything in my closet. It is a little bit snug on me, though, especially the arms. Anybody has some tips on how to stretch a too small wool sweater?

Winter Is Coming

Ha! I’ve been waiting the entire year to use that as a post title (I watch too much TV, I know.) Anyway, winter is coming. This is the first day of the year that the temperature dipped below 65. It may not seem that cold to you guys, but trust me, in Hanoi, 50 degrees is positively arctic. The humidity makes the cold so much worse, just like it makes the heat worse too.

My outfit is inspired by Carey Mulligan’s character in Never Let Me Go – muted colors, chunky sweater and scarf (she usually has on a big coat and a beanie too), and wellingtons. I’ve always loved her wardrobe in that, even though the movie makes me feel absolutely wretched. There are movies that make me sad and movies that make me cry, but Never Let Me Go is just depressing for depression’s sake. Even Andrew Garfield can’t make it any brighter for me.
