Last week I posted an outfit with this gold velvet waistcoat, which is a bit big on me. Well, I finally figured out how to make it fit better – I (very badly) sewed two darts in the back, and voila, it fits! For the outfit, I tried to evoke a three-piece suit – I’ve always loved the look of three-piece suits, but I don’t think I would want to wear them very often. I love pattern-mixing too much to wear a suit that is all one pattern and color. This outfit, which not only mixes patterns but textures as well, is much more my style. I thought about adding a brooch to make it even more “me”, but in the end, decided that the outfit is busy enough.

When I first saw this red cardigan, it immediately reminded me of Mr. Rogers’ iconic sweater. Unlike many of my US friends and readers, I didn’t grow up with Mr. Rogers and only heard of him when I went to college in the US. Still, Mr. Rogers was such a major figure in pop culture that I couldn’t help but become familiar with him and admire him for everything he did. So for this outfit, I took some inspiration from the man himself and put together a Mr. Rogers-esque outfit with these pants and shoes. I don’t have a pair of canvas shoes like his, so I made do with my saddles shoes instead, and my cat brooch is a nod to the puppets on his show. Tom Hanks, eat your heart out.

Woman Without A Coffee Pot

Here’s my outfit for this week’s SIA, inspired by Paul Cézanne’s “Woman with a Coffee Pot“. These pants (a new-to-me, hand-me-down pair from my mom) are perfect because their color and texture mimic the color and texture of the wall in the painting, and my boots are to reflect the rich brown of the table. The top, however, took some thinking. I was going to wear my navy cable-knit sweater and add a silver brooch, but that was a bit too similar to my “Paul Revere” outfit (I’ve already reworn my white shirt.) In the end, I decided on this Fair Isle sweater instead – there are both gray and white in the pattern, so it’s a nod to the texture on the woman’s dress, the flowers on the wall behind her, and the coffee pot and cup all at the same time. So it’s a bit of a looser interpretation, but I like it.
