The Grand Budapest Hotel

I was going to do a full review of The Grand Budapest Hotel but I was too lazy to make screencaps, so here’s the quick version accompanied by unrelated outfit photos: it’s funnier than I expected, but while I like it, it doesn’t make me go “OMG amazeballs” (actually, nothing can make me say that. Ever. But you know what I mean) like some of his other movies. Then again, I’ve always been more partial to Wes Anderson’s drama/romance stuff (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom) than his adventure stuff (The Life Aquatic, The Darjeeling Limited.) Besides, he is one of those directors you either love or you don’t, so if you’re a fan, you’ve probably watched this already and don’t need my opinion to convince you.

And hey, the outfit may not be as unrelated as it seems, because there is a symmetrical quality about it in my shirt and belt, and Wes Anderson’s visual style is all about symmetry, so… No? Stretching it too much? OK. Stopping now. Have a great weekend everybody!

Colors With Silly Names

I just spent the last four days giving the entire tag system of the blog an overhaul. My shoulders are screaming from too much computer, but at least it’s done. Now you can use the tag to see how I’ve worn a certain item, or find a look by colors. It was interesting to go back to the earlier posts (there is so much WTF in some of those early outfits, like seriously, what the fuck was I thinking?) and see how my style has changed. One thing I’ve noticed is that once I moved home, I don’t wear a lot of colors anymore, it’s mostly black and blue and gray. Of course the main reason for that is my changing style and taste, but ideally, I’d like to be able to put together grown-up outfits without sacrificing colors too.

And on that note, I’m taking part in Heidi and Marissa‘s semi-annual Pantone-inspired Color challenge, or as I like to call it, the Colors with Silly Names challenge. Yesterday’s color was Radian Orchid, which is kind of a soft purple, and my cardigan is perfect for it. The weather is warming up, but very slowly, so I resisted the temptation of dressing like it’s still winter by wearing white jeans, to make the outfit more spring-appropriate.

ETA: The white jeans might be my own decision but I can’t take credit for top half of the outfit, which is lifted directly from this pin.

Student Approved

The other day a student complimented me on this outfit and said that she really likes my style. It was funny, because she was wearing a similar outfit (white blouse, dark skirt, sandals) only hers was more boho (everything loose-fitting, blouse untucked) and less schoolmarm-ish. I thought she looked way cooler, even though I could never pull it off. If I tried the boho look, I’d probably end up looking more like a hobo. But hey, I’ll take the compliment, thank you very much.

The Constant Accessory

I’ve talked before about how most of my jewelries are brooches because I don’t like having necklaces or bracelets against my skin. The only accessory I can stand wearing against my skin is my watch (I’ve had it for so long and worn it so much that you can kind of see where the design on the band has chipped off), but you guys don’t see it very often because I usually take it off before taking outfit pictures. I don’t think of it as a piece of jewelry or accessory as much as a necessity, like a phone.¬† Except for today. I felt the outfit needed some kind of accessory but nothing looked right, so the watch it is.

And gods, I just realize this is the third black-and-white outfit I’ve worn this week. I know B&W has been kind of a trend this summer (thanks to Tom & Lorenzo) but I honestly don’t know why I reach for it so often. I’ll have to try to wear more colors next week. This blog is called “14 Shades of Grey” for a reason and I don’t want to regress to those days.

Just Peachy

I apologize for that embarrassingly corny title, but I’ve always¬† been bad with titles. I needed help from the whole class and went through countless horrible world plays before I came up with an OK title for my thesis script. I apologize for the wrinkly mess that is my shirt too, but that’s what you get after sitting hunched over a desk all day.

Anyway, it’s not even close to fall yet, but stores are already putting out their end-of-summer sales, which is awesome for me because it means I can finally get some summer-appropriate things and still swear them. Like this shirt. It’s kind of a dressy t-shirt, which is exactly what I need right now.
