Weekly Capsule 41.4: Tabby And Calico

striped top brown printed skirt heeled loafers by 14 shades of grey

I didn’t realize it when I put this outfit together, but I’m actually wearing two cat colors – the tabby in my striped top, and the calico or tortoiseshell in my printed skirt (I believe that’s the sort of association only a true cat lady would make.) Coincidentally, I also have a tabby and a calico, so it’s quite appropriate. I should’ve worn my cat brooch too 🙂

Weekly Capsule 41.1: Gray Day

grey wide-leg pants navy top brown heeled loafers by 14 shades of grey

I got these pants as hand-me-down from my sister a while ago and didn’t get around to wearing them for the longest time because, well, they feel too “office-y”. But I get a bit tired of skinny pants all the time, so I decided to give them a try.

… And I hated them. Maybe I didn’t do a good enough job picking the top to pair with it, because while I like the silhouette, the whole outfit feels kinda aging and frumpy to me. And the colors are kind of grim – these pants may look better with a crisp white shirt. Well, I’m going to keep the pants in rotation to see if I could style them in any way that feels more “me”, but if not, they’re going back to my sister.

Weekly Capsule 34.3: Schoolmarm/girl

white shirt navy skirt brown loafers heels by 14 shades of grey

This is what I wore for my first solo class this semester (I have been teaching several classes but always in conjunction with older professors; this is the first time I’m on my own). Considering I dress like a schoolmarm most of the time, it didn’t take me long to put this together. My only qualm is that it might look “schoolgirl” instead of schoolmarm with the white button-up and navy skirt, but then I saw this outfit featuring the exact same skirt, and I thought I’d be fine. The class went well (I showed a collection of Pixar short films, which I always do with every beginners’ class), everything was good.

Then, after class, I went to my sister’s place for lunch, and as I got into the elevator, a very nice old lady turned to me and asked “What grade are you in?”

*Facepalm*

I was tempted to tell her I was in high school, but my poker face is not good enough. So I told her I was in college instead. Which is not a lie. Technically.

Weekly Capsule 34.1 & SIA: Air France

chambray shirt black pants brown heeled loafers by 14 shades of grey

This week’s SIA inspiration, the 1960 Air France poster by illustrator René Gruau, is perfect for a breezy summer vacation look. Sadly for me, the school year has started, which means I’m back to work and have to dress accordingly. So after some thinking, I decided to go for a simple chambray shirt + black jeans look to mimic the blue and black in the poster, my belt and brooch are a nod to the yellow hat, my heels are a match to the woman’s tan, and of course, I had to include a hat, even if it’s not a beach hat like the one in the poster (a beach hat would’ve looked a little ridiculous with this, don’t you think?) I wish I could have put together something to capture that French Riviera feel of the poster, but all in all, I’m happy with this.

Don’t forget to drop by Jen’s blog to see the full round-up of outfits inspired by this poster!

Weekly Capsule 18.2: Repeat

navy shirt pink skirt brown heels by 14 shades of grey

When I spring-cleaned my closet last month, I sorted my skirts into three piles – the “to be donated”, which don’t fit me/my current style anymore; the “work horses”, which I wear to work (and are all black/navy and pleated, incidentally); and finally, the “fun” skirts, which are skirts that I still like but are a bit fussy for work. Skirts like this one, basically. I love the pleats, and pink is a good color to add to my closet, but I feel it is too girly, so I don’t reach for it as often as I want. For this, I tried to balance it out with a simple shirt and necklace. I’ve worn something similar to this before, but there is something about the navy + pink combination that I really like.
