Serving Fish
Posted: September 6, 2021 Filed under: Clothes, Style Imitating Art | Tags: black, black culottes, black loafers, brooch, brown, brown fish-print blouse, style imitating art 4 CommentsFor this week’s SIA, inspired by Victo Ngai’s illustration for Christopher Caldwell’s novella “Serving Fish“, I knew I’d wear this shirt – I mean, it has fish printed on it, duh! And the colors match the painting quite well too. I kept the rest of the outfit simple, because let’s face it, this shirt is the star here. Besides, I don’t have a lot of pearl accessories either. But I did add my pearl brooch to my shoe as a nod to all the pearls in the painting.
Remember to drop by Daenel’s blog on Wednesday to see other outfits inspired by this illustration. I can’t wait!
Fresh Fish
Posted: August 16, 2019 Filed under: Clothes | Tags: belt, black, brown, brown fish-print blouse, brown loafers, white, white baggy pants 2 CommentsSchool’s started again, but it’s still hot AF, so here’s a simple, summery outfit. It’s another one inspired by Keira Knightley’s wardrobe in Begin Again – more specifically, this look. Basically, whenever I put together an outfit with a short-sleeve/sleeveless top and linen pants, you can trace it back to that movie.
Anyway, it looks like it’s going to be a busy semester. I’m teaching four classes in total – Screenwriting II, Adaptation, Script Editing, and Screenwriting for Directing Major – but at least they’re all classes that I enjoy and I don’t have to teach any freshman (despite the post title), which is never fun. On top of that, I’m also translating American GodsĀ ANDĀ Good Omens, two of my favorite books ever. So it’s going to be busy but fun, and I won’t have it any other way.
Go Fish
Posted: July 20, 2018 Filed under: Clothes | Tags: black, black khaki pants, black loafers, brown, brown fish-print blouse 1 CommentOur house was under renovation when I took these photos. My usual location (the front yard) was taken over by a pile of sand and a cement mixer, hence the new location (the side yard). It’s actually easier to set focus here thanks to the branches and bushes on the sides of the path, so maybe I’ll take photos here more often.
Anyway, this is a simple and not very blog-worthy outfit, but I’d like to post it anyway to give this blouse some spotlight. It’s so fun and I wear it a lot, but it rarely gets featured on the blog because I always pair it with basic pieces – I don’t want any color or accessory to clash with the print. Do you guys have any suggestion?
No Jewelry
Posted: September 8, 2017 Filed under: Clothes | Tags: black sandals, blue, brown, brown fish-print blouse, navy wide-leg jeans 1 CommentI’ve been feeling disinclined to wear any jewelry lately. Mostly it’s because the tops I’m wearing are pretty attention-grabbing on their own (like this fish-print blouse), so any brooch or necklace would just clutter up the outfit. Besides, I’m getting bored with all of my accessories, but don’t want to buy any new one. Also, it’s really hot and muggy these days and I just want to put on a shirt and be done with it (to the point I didn’t even bother changing my jeans + sandals pairing.) It’s going to change in the fall, I’m sure, but for now I’m going to stick to a “minimal jewelry” look.
Something Fishy
Posted: April 25, 2017 Filed under: Clothes | Tags: beige heeled sandals, blue, brown, brown fish-print blouse, navy skinny jeans 6 CommentsA couple of weeks ago, while cleaning out my mom’s closet, I commandeered a bunch of her old blouses – my mom used to be quite the fashionista back in the day, but now she’s retired, so she doesn’t wear them anymore. A lot of her things are out of style (though you never know when they may be back in style again), but some are classic enough or basic enough that I could still wear today.
This blouse, however, isn’t one of those cases (I can’t imagine when a fish-printed blouse would be called “classic” or “basic”). Still, it’s made of silk, and the print looks fun, so I thought I’d give it a try. I expected it to be difficult to style because of the print and the pyjama-ish silhouette, so I kept the rest of the outfit simple, but it turned out quite well, didn’t it? Plus, it’s so nice and comfy. I’m hoping to wear it a lot more this summer.
