Weekly Capsule 33.2: Normcore

pink tee boyfriend jeans black slip-ons by 14 shades of grey

Is “normcore” still a buzzword? Do people actually talk about “normcore” outside of the fashion and style blogosphere? I recently used it in a script to describe a character, and I was afraid it might sound too dated or esoteric. Maybe I should change it.

But that doesn’t stop me from dressing in normcore clothes during these last few days before school starts. My week consists of working from home + babysitting my nephew, with just one “public” appearance at my workshop class, so this is all I could muster. Blog-worthy? Hardly. But it’s comfy and perfect for running after a toddler, so here I am.

It also means this week’s capsule has only two looks, but next week posting will be back to normal… I hope.

Weekly Capsule 30.4: Ugh

I’m not feeling very up to it today. On the one hand, the summer has been going on for too long and I’m excited that the new semester will start in two weeks. On the other hand, I am not ready to go back to work at all, because I’ve been working so much all through summer that it doesn’t feel like much of a vacation. Maybe I need a break. Like a real break, travel-to-somewhere-else break, and not just a “staycation”. But it’s kind of late now, and with the monsoon rain arriving, it’s not safe either. Oh well.

Weekly Capsule 30.3: The Notebook

As I said last week, this year I had to be proctor twice for our school’s entrance exams. Last week I was assigned to the art and design room, which wasn’t so bad. Yeah, you still have to sit there for hours staring at the students, but they are drawing, so at least it’s fun to watch. This time, though, I was assigned to the film analysis room. It was horrifying. It’s an 8-hour exam – the students watch a movie, twice, in the morning, then they have a one-hour lunch break, and in the afternoon they have three hours to write an essay about that movie. You may think, oh, that’s not too bad, at least you get to watch a movie, right? Except that movie is The Notebook, the sappiest of all sappy romances. And I had to sit through it. Twice. Followed by three hours staring into nothingness.

If you’ve been reading here for a while, you know how I feel about romantic films. Unless they’re British and preferably take place about 200 years ago, I don’t have much patience for them. I’m going to have to watch Pride and Prejudice (the 1995 mini series, thank you very much) or North & South to feel like myself again.

Weekly Capsule 28.2: Back To Black

I think last week’s explosion of colors (apparently a red striped tee and a floral skirt count as “explosion of colors” to me now) has scared me back to my neutral looks. The weather is actually a lot cooler this week thanks to some rain, so you would think I wouldn’t mind wearing more colors, but not really. It’s funny, though, isn’t it? I started this blog because I wanted to introduce more colors into my wardrobe (hence the blog name, you see, it’s a joke that my wardrobe has only “14 shades of grey”, and also a reference to an album by Staind), and now I’m back to being monochrome again. Good thing the blog name still fits, right?

Weekly Capsule 26.4: Buyer’s Remorse

Since I started the capsule wardrobe, I’ve become a smarter shopper. I still want to cut down on my shopping, but what I buy works well in my wardrobe and I’m always excited about wearing them. Once in a while, though, I still make a purchase that I regret afterward. Like this skirt. I’ve been looking for a lighter-colored skirt, so when I saw this online, I thought it’d be great – the color is exactly what I’m looking for, the pleats look fun, and it has pockets! Perfect, right?

WRONG. When I got it, it turns out to be too short. I mean, it is knee-length on the model, so I fully expected it to look like a midi on me. Instead it looks like a school uniform on me. I know the styling doesn’t help, but nothing looks right with it. The worst thing is, it was on final sale so I couldn’t return it. I don’t know. I guess I’ll try it again in the fall with sweaters and boots to see if I can make it look more age-appropriate, if not, I’ll put away until my niece grows up 😛

And here are my outfits this week – the colors are very appropriate for a stormy, rainy week, don’t you think?

P/S: Have a safe and fun Fourth of July, my US readers! I did put together a couple of red, white, and blue outfits, which I’ll post next week.
