Times Two

At the risk of sounding like an old fart: I rarely use my phone to check the time. I still check the time on my watch. I’ve been wearing one since high school, and my wrist feels empty if I go out without it. So since my last watch died, I’ve been looking for a replacement. It hasn’t been easy, because I don’t like the overly feminine watch, but I don’t want something too heavy and masculine either. Luckily for me, my dad had this old watch lying around – it was a present from some college, but he doesn’t wear watches, so he gave it to me, and I love it. It’s definitely more streamlined than my last watch, but it goes better with my simpler style. The best part? It’s actually two watches in one (one showing the “Home” time and one showing the “World” time), so when I travel, I only have to change one of them!

Fall Trends

I’m not a trend follower by any mean. Most of the current trends (crop top, off-the-shoulder, etc.) don’t work on me, and I tend to go for the more classic look anyway. That being said, I just discovered that dress over pants is the latest trend (never mind that Vietnamese women have been wearing that combo as our traditional costume for nearly a century), I’m all over that. It’s comfy, it can be dressed up or down, and best of all it allows me to wear dresses that are too short or too frilly for work – like this one. I’m not brave enough to try a different kind of pants other than these cropped black ones, but I’m happy to experiment (maybe with skinny jeans next?)

Apparently dark floral print is a trend this fall too, so as far as I know this is the most on-trend outfit I’ve ever worn 😛

Fancy T

It seems this place has turned into a travel blog lately, doesn’t it? I can’t help it – I’m still riding on the high of my trip (and dreaming about my next trip), so that’s all I want to write about. Another thing is that our house and yard are being renovated right now, so it’s hard to find a good spot for outfit photos. But I’m slowly getting back to the habit of documenting my outfits, and when the semester begins for real in September, I’m sure the blog will be back to usual.

In the meantime, here’s a simple outfit – since I haven’t had to teach yet, I’m not inclined to put too much effort into my work outfit (because nobody is going to see me when I’m at my desk entering grades into the computer all day.) A fancy T-shirt – that matches my sandals! – and black pants are good enough.

The Door Within

Last week when I posted the inspiration for SIA, “The Door Within” by Jean Fetman, which was found by this week’s host Erin in a dumpster (!), I said I didn’t know if I could participate or not because I had nothing that colorful in my closet. But then Jen and Erin persuaded me to try, so try I did, and lo and behold, I did find something – this top!

So maybe it’s not as colorful as the painting, but the painterly quality of the print on the front is an OK match. To pair with it, I chose my black pants and burgundy heels because there is a bit of black and dark red in the painting, and then topped it off with my “house” pendant – the title is “The Door Within”, so I wanted to include “a door within” in my outfit as well. I’m just happy that I did manage to put together an outfit for SIA after all, but the outfit itself is not that bad (even if I do say so myself.)

I wore this to a faculty meeting last Saturday – school hasn’t officially started yet, but we’re slowly getting back to the everyday grind. I am not looking forward to it…

The Curse Is Broken

Last week, I lamented the loss of my “rain shirt” and the fact that it might not rain for as long as the shirt stayed missing. Well, guess what? A couple of days later I found the shirt (or, rather, my mom found it in her closet), and it immediately started raining! The rain shirt worked its magic again!

The only problem is that it rained really hard for the entire week, to be followed by a week of scorching sun, so there won’t be a lot of outfit post next week. It’s not just because the weather kept me from taking photos outside, but it also seriously affected my ability to put together cute outfits. Most of the time I just tried to stay dry and clean (last week) or cool (this week) as much as possible – take this outfit, for example: stretchy pants that can be rolled up to avoid puddles, shoes that can be wiped clean easily, and a perfunctory top. That’s the best I can muster. Pretty much the only part of the outfit I put some thought into is the necklace – with droplet-shaped pendant to match the weather (theme dressing is what I’m best at.)

Fake Suit

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, then you know I have this thing about blacks and whites that don’t match, i.e. they drive me insane. I’m not sure if it’s something I picked up from reading Tom & Lorenzo, or if it’s just the way my brain works, or if it’s because I have a lot of black clothes but none of them match. So I was really excited when I found that my black blazer and my black pants are close enough that I could wear them together.

… Well, they kinda match. If you tilt your monitor at a certain angle.

Maybe I should just buy a suit and be done with it.

Weekly Capsule 43.3: Layering

gingham shirt embroidered cardigan black pants black flats by 14 shades of grey

This is probably the most colors/patterns I’ve worn in a while. I guess there’s something about this cardigan that just brought out the maximalist in me, even though I still try to keep the colors limited by picking the least dominated shade in the embroideries (blue).

Also, these flats are hand-me-down from my sister. I agreed to rescue them because they’re too small for her, plus they’re falling apart a little bit and she doesn’t want them to languish in her closet. They may not last pass this season anyway, but I’ll try to give them a last hurrah. In fact, all of my shoes this week are falling apart, so expect to see them on the blog a lot in the next few weeks. I’m going to wear them out all together, so I can discard them with a clear conscience 🙂
