No, not BMI (Body Mass Index), but rather BIM – Big Important Meeting. Yes, I just came up with that acronym. I had a Big Important Meeting at work, meaning I had to dress a bit more “seriously”. Usually, I would just throw a blazer on and call it a day, but it’s still too hot for that, so here’s the best I could do – summer business casual. Of course, I couldn’t let go of my usual touches altogether, so I added a brooch too.
Bonus – here’s my dog, having fully recovered from her ordeal earlier in the summer. You can’t even see the scar underneath her fur!
The outfit is nothing to write home about, so I’m hijacking this post to talk about Avengers: Endgame instead. The title is actually an obscure reference to Goose, the cat/Flerken in Captain Marvel – I’m wearing a cat brooch after all. I’m still wondering why they renamed him “Goose” instead of keeping the name “Chewie” from the comics. Probably now that Disney owns both Star Wars and the MCU, they don’t want the two confused, plus “Goose” is a nod to Top Gun, which is appropriate for a film about a fighter pilot set in the 80s/90s.
Anyway, let’s move on to Endgame. In short: it’s good. OK, slightly longer: it’s really good. It’s everything a Marvel fan can hope for in a film that is 11 years in the making. And yes, it is a film for Marvel fans. I can’t imagine any casual viewer can watch it and feel the same emotional impact. But as for those who have been with Marvel from the start, you’d laugh, you’d cry, and you’d cheer your heart out. I especially love all the callbacks and payoffs of details set up in other films, which make the whole thing (and I mean the whole of MCU, not just this movie) very cohesive and well thought-out. And it’s a very focused film too, despite its 3-hour run time. Unlike Infinity War, which has to set up so many new dynamics, Endgame is very much a film of the original Avengers – Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, and Black Widow. It is their swan song, and as painful as it sometimes is, it is the send-off they (and the fans) deserve. We have a new generation of superheroes now, but I’m not sure that the success of this phase of the MCU can ever be repeated. It truly feels like the end of an era.
You know that weird limbo week between Christmas and New Year when you don’t know what day it is and what you’re supposed to do? It’s like that for us now, except it’s a whole month between Christmas/New Year and the Lunar New Year. We don’t have an official New Year celebration, but we do get a day off, and then it just kind of bleeds into the preparation for the Lunar New Year. It’s even more confusing at school because that was the end of our fall semester and now the new semester has started but nobody really wants to work because our minds are all on that long break.
Basically, we’re all tired and want a break, is what I’m saying.
Anyway, this was what I actually wore for Christmas – it was a normal working day for us, so I just celebrated by adding a Christmas tree brooch to my blazer.
Speaking of which, check out this awesome tree at our school – can you guess what it’s made of? That’s right, it’s 35mm film! Only at a film school, right?
I’ve often complained about the difficulty of finding a good pair of boyfriend jeans – most of the pairs labeled as “boyfriend jeans” I try on are just one tiny step above skinny in terms of fit. So, frustrated, I decide to just buy a pair of men’s jeans and be done with it. And wouldn’t you know, the fit is perfect. The waist is just high enough, the legs are not too tight or too baggy, and the pockets are nice and deep (why are pockets on women’s jeans so small?) I guess I’m just going to buy men’s jeans from now on!
Hope all of my US readers had a fun (and delicious) Thanksgiving. Alas, it was a normal working day for me, and the end of the semester is quickly approaching too, so there are papers to mark, grades to turn in, and a million other things. It’s always my least favorite part of the semester, but I guess you have to get through that to reach the nice break on the other end.
It doesn’t help that the weather has been really annoying lately, hot and dry followed by cold and wet. It can’t seem to make up its mind if it wants to be late fall or early winter, which means I often can’t decide what to wear until the morning, and by then it’s either too late to take photos or I don’t feel like it. So here’s an old outfit from a couple of weeks ago, when it was nice and cool.
