Luggage Bar Code Sunset

Here’s my outfit for this week’s SIA, inspired by Douglas Coupland’s “Luggage Bar Code Sunset No.4”. Pretty self-explanatory, right? Stripes, polka dot, yellow, red. Check, check, check, and check. The only thing I’m missing is the blue of the polka dots, but I’m trying to cut down on colors to no more than three per outfit (ha, maybe I should start a Color Anonymous or something), plus the red and yellow are more prominent anyway.

Sorry my post is so short, but I really have to get back to my translation of Ender’s Game. I’ve been neglecting it all through the last few months of the semester, I’m supposed to turn it in soon and I still have 150 pages to go. So check Jess’ blog for other interpretations of the painting, and bye!

Labor Day

It’s the start of our long Labor Day break, so here’s a casual outfit to start it off. I’ll probably be wearing a version of this for the entire break. It’s not like I have anywhere to go, really. I’m just going to be boring and spend the next four days catching up on work and TV.

Now, on a different note, I have a question to ask you guys. I have been struggling with accessorizing lately. Brooches have always been my signature, but I haven’t been able to get any new ones since I moved home (no vintage shops here, and international shipping is such a hassle), and besides, you can’t wear a brooch with every outfit. When it comes to necklaces or bracelets, I feel completely uninspired with what I have. So I’m trying to rebuild my accessory collection, except I have no idea where to start. All I know is that I like something simple, preferably with a vintage or minimalist feel to it. Do you guys have any suggestion, like a certain piece or a certain design? Anything would be welcomed. I need to know what to look for before I start looking.

Snowy Owls

When I looked at this week’s SIA inspiration, the “Snowy Owls” illustration from James Audubon’s “Birds of America”, I immediately thought of this shirt – the various stripes seem to me a great way to mimic the owls’ plumage. Of course, I didn’t account for the fact that the temperature suddenly dropped by half over the weekend (why wasn’t it this cold and rainy over the Lunar New Year break, when it was supposed to be?) so I had to layer a thermal shirt underneath this. The rest of the outfit just fell into place. I remembered to include my owl brooch at the last minute – it doesn’t go with the painting, but how could I not wear an owl brooch in an outfit inspired by an owl painting?

And nope, I haven’t found another pair of ankle boots to replace these yet. I did keep an eye out during the Lunar New Year sales, but couldn’t find any that look good and fit. Well, maybe next season… I need to throw these away so I wouldn’t be tempted to reach for them. The leather around the heels is completely gone, so if I wore this in public, I’d probably have to walk like Jo from Little Women when she had to hide the patch at the back of her skirt.

Wear All The Stripes!

The weather is warming up over the weekend, but it still feels deliciously fall-like – sunny, but cool and crisp. I know weather talk is boring, but you have to understand that days when humidity is below 60% are so rare for us, so I’m always excited for them. Besides they never last – it’s going to rain today, all the way until the end of the week.

Another thing to be excited about: this shirt. My stripe addiction is no secret, and I’ve been trying to find a new long-sleeved striped shirt with no success, so when I tried it on and it fits, I knew I had to get it. I mean, it has all the stripes. What’s not to love, right?

And finally, yet another exciting thing: I know, I know, you guys are probably still screaming about the Breaking Bad finale, but it was the last episode of The IT Crowd that I watched over the weekend. It still has the signature surreal sense of humor, there are some great callbacks to previous episodes, and a Game of Thrones reference. I’m happy.
