Very, Very, Very, Very, Very, Very, Very Dark Blue Tights

That’s a Father Ted reference in the title, in case you’re wondering (my third favorite sitcom, after The IT Crowd and Black Books.) I chose that because my tights are actually not black but very, very, very dark blue. Not that anyone can tell, since my dress is long enough and the boots high enough that the tights are barely visible. Usually I hate it when the colors in my outfit are close in shade but do not match – blacks that don’t match are one of my biggest sartorial pet peeves – but these are fleece-lined, and with the recent drop in the temperature, I wouldn’t wear anything else.

Weekly Capsule 50.3: Backwards

I wore this for the opening ceremony of the film festival – so yeah, the posts this week are actually backwards (the post on Monday was actually my Friday outfit.) The opening is not as formal as the award ceremony, so I went with something a little more dressed up but not too much.

At the risk of sounding like a total fashion victim, when putting this together I was actually thinking of the last outfit in The Devil Wears Prada (that last scene is my favorite in the movie, and one of my favorite endings) but my neck got cold so I had to add the chambray shirt underneath. Speaking of which, some of the outfits in that movie look pretty dated now, don’t they? Like this ridiculous getup.

Weekly Capsule 50.1 & SIA: No Stress

I actually had a different outfit in mind when I picked out this week’s SIA inspiration, “Stressed Out” by Layla Holzer. It involves my black embroidered sweatshirt and brushstroke skirt, but when I put them together, they looked hella awkward, so I had to rethink the whole thing. I thought of my black-and-white Zara dress next, but I only wore it for special occasions. Then I realized I had the perfect special occasion for it – the award ceremony for our school’s film festival. Once I had the dress as my foundation, the rest of the outfit came together quite easily.

I’ll talk more about the film festival later in the week, but suffice to say, it was fun and not nearly as stressful as I thought (well, I didn’t have a lot of responsibilities to begin with…) Anyway, at least I got an SIA-appropriate outfit out of it.

Weekly Capsule 10.4: Skirt Edition

Well, I said I was going to try these boots with skirt, so here we are. I… like them here better than in yesterday’s outfit, but now the rest of the outfit looks kind of frumpy, no? I don’t know. I guess I’m just in a cranky mood today because it’s been raining for too long, plus it’s that time of the year again when my script reading job gets super busy and my brain hurts from reading too much. I would want to say that it’s going to be better next week, but the weather is warming up, and for us that means terrible humidity (I’m talking about the-walls-are-sweating-the-floor-is-sweating-everything-is-sweating level of humidity here), so… no. It won’t be better.

Anyway, this was my last chance to try these boots before putting them away until next winter (again: warming up next week), but I haven’t decided if they’re a keeper yet. Thoughts?

Weekly Capsule 10.3: High-heeled Boots

I almost didn’t take pictures today because it was rainy and miserable, as it has been the whole week, as it has always been at the beginning of spring here in Hanoi – you can just see how humid it is in the fogged up photos. But my sister just swapped me these boots, and I’d like to show them off. In hindsight though, the outfit is not great. I’m not used to wearing high-heeled boots, plus I just threw them on without thinking how well they go with the rest (other than the fact that they helped me avoid the mud), so the outfit feels a little awkward. Maybe tomorrow I’ll try them with a skirt to see if that works better.
