Mirror, Mirror On The Wall
Posted: February 25, 2019 Filed under: Clothes, Style Imitating Art | Tags: black, black embellished sweatshirt, blue, blue skinny jeans, brown, brown cut-out ankle boots, green, green scarf, style imitating art 2 CommentsFor this week’s SIA, inspired by the mirror work of the Ali Ibn Hamzeh Shrine in Shiraz, Iran, I had planned an outfit with my sequin T-shirt and green khaki trousers (for the glitter and the green color, you see.) Unfortunately, the weather cooled down unexpectedly, so I had to go with plan B – this embellished sweatshirt and a green scarf. My light blue jeans are simply to stick with the color scheme, but these boots are a revelation, if I do say so myself – the cutouts are to mimic the intricate design of the mirror tiles. All in all, I’m happy with the outfit, even if it wasn’t what I had in mind.
If you haven’t sent me your outfit, you still have until tomorrow. And don’t forget to check back on Wednesday to see how others interpret this artwork!
Rosy And Sparkly
Posted: March 27, 2017 Filed under: Clothes, Style Imitating Art | Tags: black, black embellished sweatshirt, cream khaki pants, red, red suede heels, style imitating art, white 3 CommentsFor this week’s SIA, inspired by a roses-and-sequins painting of the growArts program, I had decided to bring out my trusty rose-printed tunic. However, the weather turned cold suddenly (the last cold snap of the season, I believe), so I had to go with a looser interpretation. In the end, though, I’m quite happy with the outfit – it has most of the colors of the painting, and the embellishments on my sweatshirt bring just the right touch of sparkles. I also managed to take pictures with some pink roses in the background, so the roses are represented as well.

Glint, Gleam, Glitter
Posted: February 10, 2017 Filed under: Clothes | Tags: black, black embellished sweatshirt, black pumps, blue, blue skinny jeans, green, green pleated scarf 3 CommentsSo the traditional outfit from Wednesday’s post is what I wore to the Lunar New Year celebration at work, and here’s what I wore at home – it was mostly a day of preparing, cooking, and eating food, so I wanted something simple that I could move around in, but I also wanted to show a sense of festivity too, so this embellished sweatshirt was the perfect choice. (The scarf and the shoes were literally an afterthought – I spent most of the day indoors so there was no need for them; they were lying around so I just threw them on for the pictures.)

A bit of unrelated note on the title: I was running out of titles when I suddenly remembered this bit in Terry Pratchett’s A Slip of the Keyboard, in which he talks about how some words sound exactly like their meaning. Here, I’ll bring up the quote: “I like the fortuitous onomatopoeia of words for soundless things. Gleam, glint, glitter, glisten … they all sound exactly as the light would sound if it made a noise. Glint is sharp and quick, it glints, and if an oily surface made a noise it would go glisten.” Thinking about words like that, feeling them like that, that’s the mark of a good writer.
All About The Coats
Posted: March 15, 2016 Filed under: Clothes | Tags: black, black boots, black embellished sweatshirt, black tee, blue, brown, brown suede ankle boots, floral coat, navy skinny jeans, tan trench coat 5 CommentsAfter a week of warming up, the weather starts cooling down again (told you so) but I’m feeling super lazy about putting together outfits right now, so I’m wearing what I call “easy outfits”. Just something perfunctory – like jeans and a T-shirt or sweatshirt, and nice coats and boots. Voilà! Instantly put-together without having to put much thought into it.

Black Sparkles

As I’m typing this, I’ve just had a huge meal and am currently on the couch snacking on all kinds of delicious preserved fruits and candies, which is as it should be. Like I’ve always said, the best thing about the Lunar New Year is the food 😀
Also, it means that I’m not actually wearing this outfit featured in today’s post. I did wear the sweatshirt earlier in the day, but with stretchy jeans, because you know, food. I am planning to wear it for the office party next week though (in Vietnam we usually have the office party after the holiday. Before the holiday there is just too much to do and everybody is in a rush to get home to their families so it’s no fun.)
I had this sweatshirt in mind when I picked the inspiration for this week’s SIA, “Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket” by James Abbott McNeill Whistler. For the rest of the outfit, I was debating whether to include more gold or grayish green to mimic the painting, but in the end, I decided the embellishments are enough (there is a bit of green in them) and kept the rest of the outfit simple.

Don’t forget to check back tomorrow to see how others interpreted this painting! I’m going back to my snacks now…
