Weekly Capsule 12.3: Night At The Opera

I actually wore this last weekend to go a concert with my mom at the Hanoi Opera House. I don’t have that many occasions to dress up for, but when I do, this is my go-to “special occasion” dress – it’s really easy to style, and it looks more put together than everything else I had. (Although, if I’m being really honest, another reason I automatically reach for it whenever the word “fancy” comes up is because it’s one of the few things in my closet that I paid full price for, and I’ve only worn it, like, four or five time since, so I’d like to get my money’s worth :p)

Anyway, the concert was fun. It was to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of Vietnam joining La Francophonie, so there was a nice mix of Vietnamese and French music (Clair de Lune played on Vietnamese traditional instruments and Vietnamese folk songs sung by a French choir, that kind of thing.) It was too bad that they didn’t allow DLSR inside the Opera House, because the architecture is gorgeous. I had to make do with these crappy phone photos instead.

Thursday List

It’s Thursday and my brain is shutting down, so I thought this list of questions I got from happy, honey and lark a while ago would be a fun way to fill up the post.

What did you look like one year ago today? Pretty much the same (even my hair was the same length, because I only have it cut once a year, around June or July when it gets too hot to have longer hair). It was way warmer this time last year though.

When did you wake up this morning? I’m not sure what time it was, but my mom turned the bathroom light on so it must’ve been pretty early. Then again at around 6:15, which is my usual wake-up time when I have to teach in the morning.

What was the first thing you thought when you woke up? “Is Taco back yet?” Our dog, Taco, has gotten into the annoying habit of escaping through the backyard fence and going on nightly excursions. Apparently he came back around midnight.

Have you called someone today? Who and what did you say? The publishing company where I translate books. My translation of “Warm Bodies” just hits the shelves so I asked when I can stop by to pick up my complimentary copies.

What mood are you in? Tired. Is that a mood? I don’t know. I’m just tired.

Do you hurt anywhere? My shoulders and back and neck from too much computer, as usual 😦

If you could choose anything to eat right now, what would you want? Chocolate!!! Always.

What did you buy last? Oh man I honestly don’t remember. Does grocery count?

Which was the first website you visited on the internet today? I checked my email, then feedly and tumblr.

What are you doing tonight? Watching Hannibal. I’ve just started it, so I’m doing a marathon (the only kind of marathon I do) to catch up, except it’s not always a good idea to watch too much of it before bed.

Which is the first song you put on today? Care of Cell 44 by The Zombies. I just downloaded their album after last week’s Mad Men.

What were you doing exactly a week ago, this time? Probably the same thing I am doing now – at my desk tearing my hair out over a script.

What are you wearing today? Mango top, F21 jeans, Target cardigan, thrifted Steve Madden heels, and Icing necklace. My “pop of color” rule continues to work out well.

The weekend then, what about it? Nothing on Saturday, then on Sunday I’m teaching a class for amateur filmmakers. So more work. I’m thinking about showing this short film to them though, so that should be fun. I like traumatizing my students (go ahead, watch it. You know you want to :D)

So this is the outfit that I actually had planned for SIA, before I accidentally wore another that could work as an interpretation of the painting as well. I like the silhouette of this better, though I had to admit that the colors in the other outfit are a closer match to the painting.

… OK, gotta go now, I have Game of Thrones and Turn waiting on my laptop. Don’t forget to check out Animated Cardigan to see all the other outfits inspired by this week’s painting, Andrew Wyeth’s “Bonfire”.

Circle Of Nerds

Yesterday I talked about how I miss thrifting, but you know what I miss most about LA? Having friends with whom I can discuss movies and TV shows. Especially now that the holiday season has started and all these big movies are coming out. That may sound weird considering that I’m working at a film school, but none of my co-workers are film buffs in the same way that I am, the way that my friends in LA are. My co-workers don’t get excited about Catching Fire coming out next week, they would never consider using The Avengers to teach a class on writing an ensemble cast (which is what I’m planning to do), and they certainly won’t scream when they find out Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is going to be a movie. Even the students, who may be more in touch, aren’t that passionate about those fandoms. I can still talk to my friends on Facebook, of course, but it’s not the same. I’m thinking that when the new season of Sherlock premieres in January, we may have to have a Skype viewing session…

P/S: I’m going to be wearing a variation of this blazer + skinny jeans + boots combination pretty much all winter along. It just works, so why mess with it, right?

Mod

I have been going through thrifting withdrawal since I moved home, so I try to feed it by raiding my mom and my sister’s closets, which sometimes can yield a gem like this 60’s mod dress. Granted, it is a bit small around the shoulder and neck for me (if I button it up all the way I won’t be able to breath) and the material is only appropriate for late fall/winter, but it’s a true vintage piece, it’s in perfect condition, and it’s striped – how can I pass it up?

Plus, it’s great for this week’s SIA outfit, inspired by James Tissot’s portrait of Colonel Frederick Gustavus Barnaby. My dress, leggings, and cardigan represent the dominant black and red color scheme, of course, while my boots (which are also my Take One, Pass It On item – I know I’ve been wearing them a lot; I think it’s to make up for last season when I couldn’t find a pair of brown riding boots) and the gold buttons on the dress can be counted as subtle, military-inspired nods to the Colonel’s uniform.
