Last Outfit Post Of 2016

I was debating whether to post this outfit or not. Let’s face it, the blogosphere is pretty much dead in the week between Christmas and New Year, and the outfit itself is not that interesting. But then I decided to stick to the schedule anyway, because this is the only outfit I have left in my 2016 folder. So here’s a black-and-white look to close out the year.

I’ll the back later this week with the book reviews and the year in review post, as usual.

Jeans Are The New Tights

Thank the gods for this trend of dresses with pants. It’s much more comfortable than dresses with tights, it looks more interesting/grown-up than dresses with leggings, and because of that, it makes getting dressed a lot easier in the morning. Which is exactly what I need when I’m running around like a headless chicken with a million things to do.

Natural Whimsy

Did I ever mention that this cardigan is actually from the kid’s section? If I like something enough, I have no problems with buying from the kid’s or the men’s section (as long as it fits, of course!) With this one, I fell in love with the embroideries, so I just got the largest size available.

I’ve always loved embroidery. Of course, that was before it became a big trend in 2015-2016. Now embroidery is everywhere, but I don’t see anything I really love. At least the embroderies on this cardigan are somewhat cohesive, as opposed to what is called “forced whimsy” by my favorite celebrity style bloggers, Tom and Lorenzo. Are they whimsical? Yes. Forced? I don’t think so.

Spring? What Spring?

Don’t let my smiles fool you. I’m not feeling this outfit at all. Granted, it looked better in my head. I was thinking black stripes, tan, light-washed jeans, all classic items, right? But this looks awkward as hell. And the brooch is a total afterthought. I guess this in-between weather just got to me. For the entire month of March (and maybe even before that, I can’t remember), the sky has been the color of dirty cotton balls and it’s been drizzling or foggy most days. I appreciate the new leaves and the flowers, and I know I will complain when the sun arrives and it gets hot, but can we just get something else to break up the monotony here, please?

I envy those of you who get to have a real spring with sunshine and shit. All we get is fog, smog… and… uh, bugs.

Chandelier

So far this month, I’ve been keeping my resolution to wear at least one piece of jewelry with each outfit. Sometimes it’s difficult, because most of my jewelries are the similar – either a brooch or a pendant – and I get bored so easily, but I do admit they make the outfit a little more special, and when I’m stuck, I can always build an outfit around a piece of jewelry.

Not this outfit though. I figured this sweatshirt has enough glitter to stand on its own without any jewelry 😉

Second Semester

It’s the second week of the new year, and also the second week of my second semester teaching solo. At the end of the last semester, it wasn’t clear if I was going to keep teaching this class or not (I taught Film Analysis 1 last semester, so this semester I would go on to teach Film Analysis 2), and the students were kind of disappointed when I told them I didn’t know yet. So I was glad to find out I still got the same class, and it was really heartwarming to hear the students cheering when I walked into the classroom.

Now, onto a new semester with more superhero and fantasy movies!

Weekly Capsule 10.1: Gingham & Floral

For this week’s SIA, inspired by Ernest Bieler’s “The Knitting Lesson”, I put together a simple outfit with elements pulled from the painting – the gingham on the old woman’s head scarf, her black dress, the little girl’s pink dress, and her floral head scarf. It is still not warm enough for skirts right now, but I’m getting a bit tired of jeans, so a skirt and sheer tights it is. It’s annoying that the amount of time I can wear a skirt is so short – a few weeks in April and May, and then a few weeks in October and maybe November, and that’s about it. Any time in between is just too cold for bare legs/too hot to have a waistband around your torso. Or maybe I’m just making up excuses because I’m more of a jeans girl.
