Wedding Portrait

My interpretation of this week’s SIA inspiration, Jan Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, is a little different. Sure, it has most of the colors of the painting (green and black, with a touch of brown), but the print of my dress makes it decidedly more futuristic – usually, I would try to echo the feel of the painting if I can, but I see this print as my way of mimicking the intricately pinked trims on the sleeves and the pleated front of the woman’s dress in the painting. I also added my brooch because it reminds me of the mirror on the wall behind the couple.

More importantly, I was going to wear this to a wedding last week, which I thought would make it appropriate for the theme of the painting. Unfortunately, the wedding was canceled due to the pandemic (“pandemic” is a word I never thought I’d type for a real-life situation. Usually I only read it in sci-fi books. But such is the time we’re living in.) The couple decided to have a very simple family affair instead of the big reception they’d planned, and my hat’s off to them for sacrificing their big day in the name of public health and safety. Anyway, even though I didn’t get to wear it to a wedding, I thought, why waste a perfectly good outfit? So here we are.

If you haven’t sent me your outfit, you still have until tomorrow! And don’t forget to come back on Wednesday to see other interpretations of this classic painting!

I’m really glad to see you here and that SIA is still going on. My state is headed toward a shutdown because of the pandemic (I’d never thought I’d be using that word either, except when talking about graphic novels) and I am a total nervous wreck…
So it’s always good to see our normal activities happening.

Great outfit! I really like the green, as it’s so spring-like, and your brooch is perfect to match the color of the bed and other reddish browns in the painting. Great job!

I’ll have my post for my outfit up tomorrow, so you can have a link to my blog for the round up. I’ve been out of the loop for some time and I forgot to post it for today!

I love the Alfioni marriage! It’s my favourite painting! We studied it in our Historiography course as part of A’level history as part of how paintings can be used as historical sources of information. It’s a beautiful one and I think your interpretation is spot on especially that brooch!
It really resembles the mirror! My friend has just postponed her wedding too. We’ve just found out our Primeminister has told us we are not to leave the house except for essential food etc trips. I’m wishing I’d picked up more vegetables when out on my way back from school like potatoes as I’m now worried I won’t have fresh veg to keep us healthy. We don’t really have a big shop with vegetables near us. I hope you are ok. How are numbers in Vietnam? Keep praying!

Thanks, Kezzie. We’re hovering around 120 cases right now (but most of those are people coming back from overseas) and things are still chugging along – we’re vigilant but not panicking. Stay safe!

I’m glad you’re both okay. Stay safe!

Isn’t green just such a beautiful color! I love your dress and such a fabulous brooche!
