Maybe I’ve Stopped Over-thinking

blue striped shirt black pleated skirt red flats by 14 shades of grey

Recently a friend has asked me if my sense of style has improved since I started the blog. I said “Definitely!” My sense of style before the blog was not so much disastrous as it was non-existent (my idea of “dressing up” was to wear my one button-up with whatever pair of sneakers that was clean), so this blog has taught me, if nothing else, to put more thoughts into what I wear.

Of course, there is another side to that, which is that sometimes it makes me over-think it. Only now, after two years of blogging, that I began to learn to realize when I’m over-thinking my outfits and piling too many accessories or combining too many colors in one. This outfit is an example. I started out with a brooch at the shirt collar because I thought the outfit needed some piece of jewelry, but it made me look like a 19th century governess, so I took it out. I’m still trying to give a modern spin to my vintage aesthetic (if that doesn’t sound too much like an oxymoron), and simplifying things is a start.

  1. I think the pop of red shoes helps add a modern touch too! I love your style aesthetic.

  2. I know exactly what you mean by trying to add a modern aesthetc to your vintage look! That’s what I’ve been trying to do, too, and it’s hard sometimes! I’m either all-out vintage, or all-out modern. But I think my latest (red pants, striped cardigan) outfit had a little vintage flare to it with the blouse. Maybe. I dunno. I’m still working on it!
I really love this outfit; that skirt is SO pretty on you, and the belt is awesome! I love the blouse, too!

very cute and so flattering! i occasionally have the days where i get dressed and then panic if my earrings dont match my necklace and my ring and my scarf… but generally im the only one that notices so i try and get over it.

and i like the phrase “modern vintage”. it has that certain je ne sais quoi to it

I LOVE this skirt on you! So pretty. And I completely agree with you. I think my style has become fine-tuned through blogging. I used to try way too hard and thought “the more, the merrier” in terms of accessories. Now I try to keep it simpler, which feels much more “me” :)

  5. I think this outfit is perfection and os no over-thought. I love good simple outfit like this, not too many accessories piled on. There are days for that too, when you just want to pile on the bracelets or layer on the necklaces. But when you are trying to put a modern vibe on a vintage skirt? A wide belt and red flats is all you need! :)

Following other style bloggers definitely inspires you to try new things, but it also makes you want to buy a bunch of clothes that we obviously can’t afford!

sigh! this outfit looks great though!

That’s definitely another negative aspect of style blogging. My shopping problem was pretty bad when I first started out, but I’ve slowly learned to control it. It helps now that I’ve moved back to Vietnam that there are not a lot of options – the affordable clothes are not always cute, and the cute clothes are never affordable!
